Whether you want to run in memory of someone or honour someone special in your life, you can pick your own hero. Don't forget your fancy dress too! Force raises thousands as Princesshay's charity of the year

FORCE Cancer Charity has announced that more than £10,000 has been raised through fundraising activities and events in Princesshay, as the centre’s nominated charity of the year for 2018.

Throughout 2018, Princesshay and FORCE have worked together to raise vital funds and awareness for the charity. Princesshay donated all proceeds from its Arctic Adventure and City Bee honey sales and members of the Princesshay security team completed a challenging 70 mile walk in 24 hours to raise funds for FORCE, walking from Dorchester to Princesshay last July. Hospiscare vans and volunteers were out in force last weekend collecting over 500 Christmas Trees across the city.

Exeter residents were able to have their tree collected in exchange for a donation and the initiative raised over £5,000 for the local charity that cares for people who have been given a terminal diagnosis.

Louise Beeken, Head of Fundraising said: “It costs £21,000 a day to run Hospiscare services, caring for people at the end of their life in their homes or at the hospice. We raise this through the generous donations and gifts in wills of the local community....

Over £10,000 raised for charity in four months

Exeter School pupils and staff are celebrating a successful first term of fundraising with the news that over £10,000 has been raised for charity in one term.

Each year a committee of Sixth Form representatives selects three charities for the school to support during the course of the academic year. For the autumn term, pupils chose Rowcroft Hospice, an independent charity providing a wide range of specialist palliative care services for people and their families with progressive life-limiting illnesses in South Devon. Hospiscare is starting 2019 with a new leader at the helm. Peter Brennan has taken on the role of Chief Executive Officer for the local charity after former CEO Glynis Atherton retired at the end of last year. The charity which provides end of life care for patients and their families in Exeter, Mid and East Devon needs to raise an annual sum of £7 million to care for the growing local population.

Choir raises over £4,000 for Exeter homeless charity

Members of Exeter Philharmonic Choir visited St Petrock's this week to present a cheque worth £4,086 to the charity which provides support, housing and prevention services for people who are homeless or vulnerably housed

The money was raised over two consecutive nights in December in the retiring collection at Exeter Cathedral following the Choir's annual carol services.

Fast-growing suicide bereavement charity Pete's Dragons appeals for trustees

A fast-growing charity that supports suicide bereaved families is appealing for new trustees to help shape its bright future. Award-winning Pete’s Dragons, which has received national and international recognition, is on the lookout for volunteers to join its board as it continues to expand ‘exponentially’.

The Exmouth-based charity supports families and individuals across Devon and also provides market-leading suicide prevention training around the country and abroad.

Pete’s Dragons currently has a caseload of 91, which equates to around 300 people across Devon.

Every Spring and Autumn Freemasons from around Devon meet to give support totalling in excess of £50,000 to local charities & organisations throughout the county who are in need of assistance, “SENSE” the Charity for the Deafblind who are based in Exeter & Newton Abbot were one of the groups who were nominated by their local lodge St. Michaels of Dawlish.

Pete is the Environmental Officer for the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, the charity that runs Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Living Coasts in Torquay and Newquay Zoo in Cornwall.

Cartridges Law continues support for local charity group

Cartridges Law is continuing its support of a project which works with people who have dementia and their carers.

It’s the fourth year the St Thomas-based solicitors have supported the Budding Friends scheme, which is run by Age UK Exeter.

Members of the group were welcomed to the Cartridges Law office for a Christmas social evening, which included a performance by the Big Noise Chorus.
