Famous faces from across the Westcountry including Ann Widdecombe and Angela Rippon are backing this year’s Surviving Winter Appeal which is being coordinated locally by Devon Community Foundation. The campaign, which has recently been launched, will help thousands of vulnerable and older people affected by fuel poverty this winter.

Exeter charity gets back on its feet after office fire

Surf Life Saving GB, a charity of more than 6,000 volunteers helping to make the country’s beaches safer places, is celebrating moving into its new offices following a fire in Exeter’s Southernhay three weeks ago (2nd November).

A fire in the ground floor of its shared office building in Southernhay, meant Surf Life Saving GB’s national headquarters were deemed unsafe and the charity was effectively made immediately homeless.

Hundreds of staff, students and local people joined the BBC in the Forum at the University on Friday 16 November for the annual Children in Need broadcast.

Hosted by BBC presenters David Fitzgerald and Victoria Graham, the festivities started at 1.30pm. The event, which was managed by the Event Exeter team in collaboration with University colleagues, featured live broadcasts by the BBC Spotlight team as well as linking to the national TV network programme throughout the evening.

Fire-struck charity moves home – with help from a friend!

Local removals company Van Man Exeter has helped charity Surf Life Saving GB move into new offices for free, after a fire at its Exeter headquarters on 2nd November.

The charity has moved next door from its previous office on Southernhay, after being told the whole building will be out of action until at least March 2013.

A season’s best for Exeter City Football Club

Exeter City Football Club set a new record for the season against Fleetwood on Saturday – by raising a total of £969.77 for the Poppy Appeal during the half-time bucket collection.

With temperatures dropping and fuel prices rising, Devon Community Foundation have launched this year’s Surviving Winter Appeal to raise money to help the vulnerable and older people at risk in Devon this winter. The campaign is supported by local celebrities including Ann Widdecombe and Angela Rippon.

With the prospect of another cold winter, the vulnerable and older people are at risk. The Surviving Winter Appeal offers anyone who receives their Winter Fuel Payment but does not need it to donate it to help those most in need in our communities.
