New lease of life for former Methodist chapel in Honiton

The former Methodist Chapel on New Street, Honiton is set for a fresh start following the granting of a new lease of the premises by East Devon District Council’s property services team.

The building which was formerly occupied by Honiton Town Council before their move to the Beehive is set to be converted into a family café with soft play facilities by new tenant Harriet Spence.

Fire at landmark Teignmouth cafe

Three appliances from Teignmouth, Dawlish and Torquay, and an Operational Assurance Officer, were mobilised to the Beachcomber Café in Teignmouth, following several calls reporting a fire.

Immediately upon arrival of the first appliance, the assistance of a fourth fire engine was requested. This was mobilised from Paignton.

Freemasons give £7,500 to aid needy in Devon

Devon Freemasons have donated £7,500 to Devon Community Foundation to help support people in need across the county. Last week the Chief Executive DCF, Martha Wilkinson was delighted to be presented with the cheque by Ian Kingsbury, the Provincial Grand Master of Devonshire Freemasons.

The generous gift brings the total donated over the last 4 years to £27,000 and will be allocated to the Foundation’s Community Grants, supporting hundreds of voluntary and community groups offering local people in need a helping hand.

Waterstones at Roman Gate to launch new cafe

On Saturday 8th October, Waterstones at Roman Gate will celebrate the launch of its new bookshop café with a day of family entertainment.

The launch will be a community event with the opportunity for customers to meet some of the café’s local suppliers and to enjoy a free hot drink with every cake purchase*. Roman Legionaries will patrol the bookshop courtesy of Living History Group Leg II Avg and popular local jazz quartet City Steam Jazz Band will perform live instore. Father Christmas to reopen pool and cafe at Cofton Country Holidays

Devon’s favourite multi-award-winning holiday park, Cofton Country Holidays near Starcross and Dawlish, is readying itself for the much anticipated reopening of its heated indoor Ashburn Springs Pool on Saturday 19th December.

Following over a month of renovations undertaken in readiness for the busy Christmas school holidays, the family friendly pool, steam room, sauna, soft play area and Amelia’s Café will be reopened by no less than Santa himself, who will be giving away free children’s presents from 11am-4pm on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th.

We are very fortunate to live just outside Exeter, a city which now boasts a vast array of assorted eateries, bars and restaurants and we endeavour to dine out with our two boys at least once a month and have done this since the boys were small as I did with my parents introducing them to new flavours and learning to behave impeccably when dining out amongst the ‘grown-ups’. Pret A Manger will be opening the doors to its westernmost UK shop next month; a spacious corner site on Exeter’s High Street. Due to open mid-September, the new shop is creating up to 20 new jobs, which the company is currently finalising recruitment for. Young Devon and River Cottage are teaming up to launch an exciting community project in Newton Abbot.

Pupils get a taste of council work in Sam ’n Ella’s kitchen

Forty pupils from local primary schools "took over" East Devon District Council for a day and had a go at running things.

They even got a ‘taste’ of the work done by EDDC’s Environmental Health inspectors when they visited Sam ’n Ella’s kitchen at Knowle in Sidmouth for a food hygiene check.
