Mantel defends her comments about Kate

Budliegh Salterton-based novelist Hilary Mantel has defended her controversial comments about the Duchess of Cambridge.

The writer had been quoted as saying the duchess was a "shop-window mannequin" whose only purpose was to breed.

But she told BBC Radio 3's Night Waves programme that her words had been taken out of context.

Mantel said her speech had clearly been addressing a perception of Catherine that had been created in the mediawhen she decribed her as "gloss-varnished" with a perfect plastic smile, and having no personality.

Bring Up the Bodies named 2012 Costa Book of the Year

Bring Up the Bodies by Budleigh Salterton-based novelist Hilary Mantel has won the title of 2012 Costa Book of the Year. The sequel to Mantel's award-winning novel Wolf Hall and the second book of a trilogy, Bring Up the Bodies continues the life of Thomas Cromwell and explores one of the most mystifying and frightening episodes in English history, the destruction of Anne Boleyn.

The announcement was made this evening (Tuesday 29th January) at an awards ceremony held at Quaglino’s in central London.

Hundreds of people turned out for the annual Christmas swims across Devon.

With milder temperatures than in previous years, beaches were packed with revellers wearing fancy dress.

Among them was Exeter solicitor Kate Baker and her friends who took a dip at Budleigh Salterton.

She told the Exeter Daily: "It was great fun and certainly cleared by hangover!"

49-hour radio show raises over £1,800

Local radio presenter Chris Tees has just completed broadcasting non-stop for 49 hours to raise funds towards the cost of launching a local community radio station.

Chris said “I planned to do 48 hrs, but forgot about the clocks going back that weekend when I booked the time off work but, I was determined to do the whole weekend. It was extremely hard especially watching the studio clock go back an hour Sunday morning”.

The challenge raised just over £900 with help from the other volunteers at the station who supported Chris throughout with food and coffee.

Police appeal for witnesses following stabbing

Police in Exmouth are investigating an assault on a bus driver in Budleigh Salterton. The incident occurred at around 8.20pm last night in South Farm Road, in Budleigh Salterton.

The driver, a man, aged in his mid-50s, was outside the Stagecoach bus at the time when he was approached by a man who assaulted him in a completely unprovoked attack, sustaining a stab wound to his right thigh.
