Successful Stoptober sees 15% increase in quitters

A month-long national campaign has seen a sharp rise in the number of Devon smokers quitting, early figures have revealed.

Early indications for the second part of the year, which includes the Stoptober campaign run by NHS Devon and Devon County Council as part of a national quit smoking attempt, show a 15% increase in the number of people stopping smoking.

And the increase has been across a wide age range. 25% of the increase was for those in the age category 18-34. Figures also show the increase is more marked in men than women.

Struggling Plymouth Argyle sack Carl Fletcher

Exeter City rivals Plymouth Argyle have sacked manager Carl Fletcher after 16 months in charge of the struggling League Two side.

Argyle are only two points clear of the relegation zone after losing 2-1 at home to John Ward's Bristol Rovers. Ward was set to become Argyle director of football just three weeks ago, until being offered the job as Rovers boss.

Man sexually exposes himself to woman in Barnstaple

Police in Barnstaple are appealing for information after a man sexually exposed himself to a young woman in the town.

The incident took place at around 7.20pm on Sunday, 30th December 2012 on Vicarage Street. Police say "A 24-year-old local woman was sitting in her car when she became aware of a man walking on the pavement towards her car. He then exposed himself to her." The suspect is described as being in his late sixties, with white hair and stubble, around 6ft tall and of large build. He was wearing a cream-coloured suit. Person freed from 'confined space' in Princesshay

Fire Crews from Exeter Danes Castle and Middlemoor were called to Princesshay at 9.37pm on Tuesday evening to rescue a member of the public following a fall into a confined space.

Fire Service personnel used safety equipment and two short extension ladders to rescue the casualty, who was conveyed to hospital by the ambulance service.

Boy who jumped off Torpoint ferry still missing

Update: Jordan Cobb is still missing after jumping from Torpoint ferry. The Coastguard stood down last night but MoD Police carried out patrols throughout the night.

A police search advisor is at the scene and all agencies including police, Coastguard and MoD Police, were due to meet this morning to co-ordinate today’s search activities. Police officers will be conducting a search of the shoreline today and the missing person investigation continues.

Boy missing after jumping off Torpoint Ferry

Police are appealing for information following an incident on the Torpoint Ferry at around 9.15pm on New Year's Eve, 31st December 2012. Officers are concerned for the welfare of 16 year old Jordan Cobb from Plymouth, who was seen to jump from the ferry into the Tamar river at around 9.15pm. Police Coastguard and the RNLI attended and conducted an extensive search for Jordan, who at the time of writing remains missing.

Hillary Clinton in hospital with blood clot after fall

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, 65, has been admitted to hospital in New York with a blood clot, officials say.

Mrs Clinton suffered a concussion earlier this month after fainting and falling down. She was reported to have had a stomach virus at the time and to have passed out after becoming dehydrated.

Doctors discovered the clot during a follow-up examination on Sunday, her spokesman Philippe Reines said. "She is being treated with anti-coagulants and is at New York-Presbyterian Hospital so that they can monitor the medication over the next 48 hours," he said....
