Half a million South West workers give bosses £4,500 for free, says TUC

Half a million people in the South West last year gave their employers £4,500 worth of work for free, according to a TUC survey released today, the ninth annual Work Your Proper Hours Day.

The study of official figures shows that 447,063 workers in the region regularly put in six and a half hours a week more than their contracted hours without getting paid for it.

Nigel Costley, regional secretary of the South West TUC, said: “Thousands of South West workers go above and beyond the call of duty each year to ensure their businesses and organisations stay afloat.

On 17th February, indie-rock band The Maratones’ new album was released. Hopeful signs for civil contractors in the South and South West

Civil engineering contractors detect signs of a modest turnaround in their fortunes in the fourth quarter of 2012.

After two consecutive quarters of clear decline, members of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) are now equally split between those whose workload is declining and those for whom it is increasing.

Less good news is that members’ order books show a second consecutive decline for the quarter. There were 5% more firms reporting declining orders than increasing orders.

CECA Southern Executive Director Alan Taylor said: “This survey shows a...

Alzheimer’s report highlights deeper problem, says Vitalise

National disability charity Vitalise says that the shock findings of a new Alzheimer’s Society report into residential care for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia point to an even deeper problem.
