Cricket club onto a great run with completion of new pavilion

After months of dedication, work on the new Heathcoat Cricket Club Pavilion is on the verge of completion at the National Trust estate, Knightshayes, near Tiverton.

All the volunteers who helped with the project are now eagerly awaiting the arrival of former England cricket captain, Mike Gatting, who will be adding final touches to the ground on Saturday 6 April.

Established in the 1920s by John Heathcoat Amory for his Tiverton factory workers, the Heathcoat Cricket Club has always had a strong association with Knightshayes and the local community.

Exeter Family Friendly raises more money for charity

Local healthcare and protection insurer Exeter Family Friendly went to work in style on Thursday 28 March to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Staff members got into the spirit of ‘Wear a hat day’ by donning hats of all shapes and sizes, raising an impressive £250 in the process.

This comes just two weeks after they raised over £350 for Comic Relief; through a range of activities including quizzes, games and 80s style fancy dress.

Some progress in the South West despite disappointing Budget

The Civil Engineering Contractors Association ( CECA ) has called on government to elevate the status of key infrastructure projects in the South West to boost economic development.

Protest outside Djibouti courthouse against election results

Members of Djibouti's opposition coalition, Union pour le Salut National (USN), gathered on Thursday outside the courthouse in Djibouti to protest against February's parliamentary election results. The opposition claim that the election was fraudulent.

Welfare benefit enquiries up by 12% says Exeter CAB

Local charity Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau today publishes its latest advice trend statistics, which show that it helped 3,300 people directly with advice on 14,040 problems, an increase of 1.3%, so far this financial year.

This year, the charity is helping clients with a debt burden of £5.5m, up by 28.3% or £1.2m from last year.

Woman in serious condition following traffic collision on Heavitree Road

Update 2 April: Police have reported that the pedestrian involved in this incident is said to be in a critical condition.

The driver, a 93-year-old man from Teignmouth was uninjured, whilst the 96-year-old female passenger sustained a broken arm and a slight head injury.

Officers have repeated their appeal for witnesses of the collision to contact them 101, quoting reference 251 of 28/03/13.

Stay-at-home mothers are being unfairly penalised, says the Bishop of Exeter

In the latest of a series of articles in The Telegraph newspaper looking into the Coalition Government's taxation policies affecting families, the Rt Rev Michael Langrish has said that "Mothers who choose to stay at home to care for their children are being unfairly penalised by a Government that has failed to reward their role at the heart of society."

Chinese officials remove Tibetan satellites

Chinese officials have reportedly cracked-down on foreign media in Tibet by dismantling satellite dishes at the Labrang Tashi Kyil monastery in Labrang (Gansu province), Amdho region, eastern Tibet on March 10th, the 54th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising in Lhasa.

The monastery was ordered to remove and burn their satellite dishes. Monastery officials were informed the satellites would be replaced with state sanctioned devices, capable of only receiving Chinese state controlled programmes. The move will block the Monastery from obtaining access to international media.
