Calling all cake fans - Help for Heroes’ annual Colossal Cake Sale is upon us again.

This year the Colossal Cake sale is supported by celebrity chef James Tanner and talk show host Lorraine Kelly.

This wonderful collaboration between Eggs for Soldiers and Help for Heroes is now in its second year and will be setting alight our taste buds.

The cake sale, which runs until 5 May, is a major fundraising event and is completely dependent on community involvement to help make it a success.

New education programme gets a Kick Start from Exeter City

Exeter City FC’s Football in the Community Charitable Trust is to pilot a new three-year learning engagement project, Kick Start, in conjunction with ATASS Respect, to work with children attending schools in the Exeter area.

The programme aims to support 30 children each year who may be at risk of disengaging from education for various reasons. Those who will be invited on to the programme will have shown a capacity to respond to alternative methods of learning, but could be vulnerable to low levels of academic achievement.

An Art for Life charity auction takes place on Saturday 11 May 2013 at the Royal Clarence Hotel in Cathedral Yard, Exeter.

Over 160 feared dead after building collapse outside Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka

Rescue efforts are continuing at a building outside the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka after it collapsed yesterday, killing at least 160 people. Primark, a clothes retailer with a large presence in Britain, confirmed that one of its suppliers was on the second floor of the Rana Plaza, and Bonmarche and Matalan are also thought to also be customers.

A spokesperson for Primark said: "The company is shocked and deeply saddened by this appalling incident at Savar, near Dhaka, and expresses its condolences to all of those involved.

Devon praised for encouraging cycling

Devon has been highlighted in the All Party Parliamentary Group’s “Get Britain Cycling” inquiry report.

Devon County Council’s Head of Highways Lester Willmington addressed the inquiry in Westminster in February to detail how more people have been encouraged to cycle in Devon.

Devon adds its voice to MMR campaign

Devon’s Director of Public Health is urging parents to ensure their children have had their MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccinations, following a measles outbreak in Wales.

Dr Virginia Pearson’s message is part of a national joint campaign between the Association for Directors of Public Health, Public Health England – the government organisation responsible for immunisation; and the Local Government Association, to increase take-up of the vaccine in children and teenagers, following the recent outbreak in some parts of the UK.

Spitfires grounded in their opening game

The Exeter Spitfires started their first season in the South West Baseball League on Sunday with a crushing 33-0 loss at the reigning champions, the Plymouth Mariners.

It was clear from the start that the Mariners were obviously very confident, as they should have been given their position as the best local team playing against a very inexperienced Spitfires lineup, who had over half their team playing their first game.
