National Volunteers' Week is in full swing and I felt compelled to write a blog about why I think volunteering is so important to charities, and importantly to the charity I work for, WESC Foundation.
If this blog inspires you, please pass it on to others and should you ever consider volunteering, we would love to hear from you....
I’ve only ever worked in the charity sector and I have chosen to dedicate my career to this for a variety of reasons. I have to believe in who and what I am working for and I have to know that the energy I put in to my working week is making a...
On Saturday 22 June, The Exeter Recorder Orchestra will be performing at Ottery St Mary Parish Church. The concert, which starts at 7.30pm, will be performed by 30 experienced, adult recorder players from around the South of England.
The Orchestra will play an eclectic mix of pieces, ranging from 16th and 17th century compositions written originally for consorts of viols and now arranged for recorders, to music by contemporary composers written specifically for recorder orchestra. The programme will also feature Vaughan Williams’ delightful English Folk Song suite.
A leading Devon charity is making Exeter an even more green and pleasant place to live.
Since November 2012 Devon Wildlife Trust’s Big Tree Plant has been working with local communities across the city to plant trees in schools, parks and public spaces. During the winter the Big Tree Plant was responsible for planting nearly 2,000 saplings. The trees are all native species and include apple, cherry, rowan, oak, alder and hawthorn. Together they are providing wildlife with new homes and adding a fresh green backdrop to Exeter.
Devon Wildlife Trust has spearheaded the project...
We are delighted to announce that The Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel has adopted Hospiscare as their Charity of the Year for 2013.
Hospiscare is a local charity providing an all-encompassing service for people with a terminal diagnosis. All of their services are provided free of charge with the support of the local community.
Employees of the Southgate Hotel have already been very busy the past few weeks fundraising for Hospiscare by organising a Pink Pig Racing event and taking part in the Starlight Walk in Exmouth on 11 May.
Proof - if proof were needed - that litter picking can be fun, was provided when East Devon District Council organised a day of activities at Heathpark in Honiton last week.
The morning started with a litter picking session around the estate, involving members of the Council’s Tenant and Communities Section along with residents, Police Community Support Officers and representatives from Honiton Community Church. Between them they bagged up several sacks of litter.
This activity was followed by a hot-dog lunch for local children provided by the Community Safety Partnership...
Bishop Michael was the Anglican representative at the Higher Level Dialogue meeting with faith leaders and the European President, José Manuel Barroso, in Brussels last week.
Mr Barroso invited religious organisations to actively contribute to the public debate currently on-going within the European Year of Citizens 2013 as well as the recently launched initiative on a new narrative for Europe.
He said: "As we are taking action to move Europe out of the economic crisis, it is clear that we also have to weather another crisis: a crisis of trust, a crisis of values. We have...
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued an advice notice for those intending to travel to Turkey: "Following recent demonstrations in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, Adana and other cities across Turkey in which police have used tear gas and water cannons, further violent protests remain possible. We advise British nationals to avoid all demonstrations."
Meanwhile in other parts of the country the FCO advises against all but essential travel to the provinces of Hakkari, Sirnak, Siirt and Tunceli. "You should be especially vigilant when travelling in other provinces...
Exeter City Football Club has announced that fan Nick Saunders has been elected to the board of national charity Level Playing Field (LPF) as an executive trustee.
