Exeter Chiefs set for Scarlets test

Having put in the hard yards off the field during a gruelling pre-season programme, it's on-field matters that take centre stage for the Exeter Chiefs tomorrow as the countdown to the new season edges ever closer.

This weekend Rob Baxter's side travel to Wales to face Scarlets in their opening pre-season fixture at the Parc Y Scarlets (3pm). It represents the first of three warm-up clashes for the Devon club - Bristol and Glasgow Warriors follow over the next two weeks – before they engage in their fourth season of Aviva Premiership action at Northampton Saints on Saturday,...

Brake, the road safety charity, is warning drivers to shape up their act as a new fixed penalty notice for 'careless driving', and higher fines for many other offences like speeding and mobile phone use, come into force today (Friday 16 August).

From today police can stop drivers and issue a ticket on the spot for risky driving such as tailgating or poor lane discipline. Drivers who commit the most serious 'careless driving' offences will still face charges in court and much higher penalties.

Why I love Exeter

My sister has always had a tendency to faint at the slightest thing - blood, manual labour, needles... but her worst weakness is heat.

Exeter has had amazing weather this summer, and I always appreciate the city more in the sun.

However, being stuck on a train for 3 hours, without air conditioning, is a downside.

My sister found herself on a delayed, and therefore highly congested, train from London to Exeter. People were standing up the aisles, sweating with a proximity far too close for comfort. Just as she was about to exit the train, she found herself fainting...

Continued improvement from the Spitfires

The Exeter Spitfires have continued to improve as their inaugural season in the South West Baseball League is approaching the finish. The Spitfires took on the Torbay Barons for a double header recently at Chadwick Field. The Spitfires, behind good pitching and some excellent hitting, including the first home runs for the club, managed to win both games.

In a back and forth battle in the opening game the Spitfires eventually came through 23-18 winners. In game two, after initially allowing the Barons to jump into an 8-0 lead, the Spitfires fought back strongly for a convincing 29-...

Local charities are winners thanks to Yorkshire Building Society staff and customers

Yorkshire Building Society in Exeter announced the voting in their Charity Choices ballot today - and ELF won the top prize of £500.

Thank you so much to the staff who nominated us and all of the customers who voted for us, and to the Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Trust for funding the awards.

Also winners were Hospicare (£300) and Balloons (£200).

Staff at the branch have been wonderfully supportive of ELF recently and all three charities were delighted with their awards.
