An evening of comedy by the well-loved Anton Chekhov. Directed by Barbara Pentecost.

Chekhov was a great theatre man and besides writing his world-famous full length plays such as “Uncle Vanya”, “Three Sisters” and “The Cherry Orchard”, he wrote a number of one act comedies which he called jests.  They make timeless fun of well-known situations proving, once again, that things don’t change!

“The Dangers of Tobacco” in a new translation by Paul Schmidt.  There may be a no smoking policy within the Blackmore but there can be no harm in considering “the harmful effects which can be observed in human beings as a direct result of indulgence in tobacco”

“The Bear”:  Grigory Smirnov, desperate to make an interest payment, arrives to collect a debt, but meets his match in Yeliena Popova, a grieving widow, whose state of mind is effected by the day being the anniversary of her husband’s death.

“The Proposal”.   Choobukov is delighted to agree to the marriage of his daughter, Natalyia to neighbour Ivan Lomov: if only he can stop the lovers arguing about land ownership and hunting dogs long enough for the ceremony to take place.

Both the latter plays will be performed in translations from the 1950s by Elisaveta Fen.

The plays will be staged between Monday 28 October and Saturday 2  November.

Curtain up 7.30pm, tickets £7.50  (£6.50  Monday).
