John Lewis hiring over 2,000 temporary sales assistants in the UK this Christmas

With fewer than 100 shopping days to go until Christmas Day, applications are open for roles at John Lewis shops across the country, from Scotland to Exeter. Positions are available in a number of departments including the Christmas shop, furnishing accessories, homeware, fashion and electricals.

Update: The FBU strike ended without major incident in the Devon today (25 September).

Commenting on today's four-hour strike by firefighters over government attacks on pensions Matt Wrack, Fire Brigades Union General Secretary, said: "This was solidly supported strike action by firefighters across England and Wales. It has demonstrated their anger and their determination.

Every autumn the orchards at Killerton National Trust estate, near Exeter, become a hive of activity with staff, volunteers and the local community helping to harvest tonnes of apples for pressing into Killerton’s award-winning cider and apple juice.

Devon County Council is seeking opinions from residents of Exeter on proposals for part-night street lighting in residential areas.

The Council has already sought views of local councillors and Police before seeking the views of the wider community. The ASK Italian Grand Tour came to Exeter last night. The programme, pioneered by the national Italian restaurant chain last October, consists of a series of fundraising events in order to raise £250,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

England selectors include three uncapped players in Ashes squad

England selectors have named a 17-man squad for the Ashes Test series in Australia including three players uncapped at Test level – Yorkshire batsman Gary Ballance, Warwickshire pace bowler Boyd Rankin and Durham all rounder Ben Stokes.

Police are appealing for information after a £2,000 glass ornament was stolen from a gallery in East Devon. Last Thursday (19 September) between 2.45pm and 3.20pm two men entered The Steam Gallery in Beer and stole a glass ornament valued at £1995.
