Living Wage increase sees £400 pay rise to people across UK

People across the UK could see a pay rise of up to £400 a year with the rise in the living wage today. The Living Wage is an opt-in scheme which has seen employers across the UK agrees to pay a fixed rate above the minimum wage designed to fit the cost of living. The Living wage has been raised to by 25p to £8.80 in London and by 20p to £7.65 in the rest of the UK per hour of work. The minimum wage currently sits at the considerably lower sum of £6.25 per hour meaning that someone working an average week of 37.5 hours would be earning close to £53 extra a week. VIDEO: Armed robbers who held 65-year old at knifepoint convicted at Exeter Crown Court

A week long trial at Exeter Crown Court has found two people found guilty of armed robbery today.

Lee Prouse, 24 and Jordanne Morris, 21, both of Stanhope Square in Holsworthy, have been found guilty of robbing Knowle Garage in Braunton on Saturday 10th November 2012.

A third defendant, 28-year-old Jamie Latta, of no fixed address, Barnstaple, pleaded guilty prior to the trial.

CCTV footage shows the masked Latta and Prouse threatening shopkeeper, Trude Mian with a meat-cleaver and a kitchen knife and force her to empty the till.

'Hot bott' cushions to keep churchgoers warm

Two churches in Devon are piloting hot cushions to keep worshippers warm during services during the winter.

The re-usable, portable ‘hot-bott’ cushion will be used in churches in Broadclyst and South Tawton.

Each church has been given 50 cushions to trial, with the aim of keeping worshippers warm and comfortable during services.

A herd of cows take to the Devon skies

That’s exactly what happened last month when a group of ‘cows’ flew through the Devon skies in an event named ‘Herd of Cows from Heaven’.

£1m research into pregnancy discrimination cost

The Government has announced a new £1m round of indpendent research into pregnancy discrimination in the UK.

The programme was approved by Minister for Women and Equalities Maria Miller and will look in into what effect the discrimination has on both families and the economy. Over 9,000 pregnancy discrimination claims have been lodged against employers in the UK since 2007 with many women being unfairly dismissed before being eligible to claim maternity pay. Exeter chef Michael is the best in the UK

Michael Caines' restaurant at Gidleigh Park, Chagford, in Devon is the home of the UK’s best cooking.

That was the verdict of the Sunday Times which yesterday published its ‘Food List’ – the top 100 UK restaurants for food.

It is yet another feather in the cap for Michael, who studied at Exeter College.

Among those congratulating him yesterday were his former mentor Raymond Blanc.

He wrote on twitter: "Warmest congratulations to Michael Caines for being number 1. The top award for a brilliant chef, gentleman and friend."

No movement on firefighter's pension dispute

Firefighters and the government are still no closer to reaching an agreement on pensions after strike action earlier today. The strike ended at 8am this morning (4 November) and was the third strike action taken by the Fire Brigades Union. The FBU has claimed that the Fire Minister Brandon Lewis has worsened the deal ahead of a strike last Friday night (1 November). The dispute is primarily focused on the issues surrounding the health of firefighters over 50 who could lose their job and some of their pensions over fitness concerns.
