SWH National Skills Academy for Construction welcomes its first female Apprentice in Highways Maintenance.

The Construction Industry is dominated by male workers and many large employers, but organisations such as CITB continue to try and attract more females into the industry. In recent years the construction sector with the support of CITB's National Skills Academy for Construction has invested considerable effort into promoting careers to under-represented groups, and recruitment of females into 'non-traditional' roles is an area of focus.

Fire at Devon caravan park

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police were called to the Lady's Mile Caravan Park in Dawlish this morning after a car was found on fire.

The fire service were alerted to the incident at 3.14 am, and on arrival found a vehicle to be well alight along with approximately ten feet of fence panel. They got to work fighting the fire using two sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets. The car was extinguished using the above equipment but was severely damaged by fire.

Police also attended as it was believed to have been deliberate ignition.

Father and son Bikathon starts in Exeter

Firefighters rescue baby from car

Firefighters were called to Dunelm Mill Car Park on the Sowton Industrial Estate, to rescue a baby that was trapped inside a vehicle.

Crew from Middlemoor attended the scene at 3.10pm on Sunday after a report that a baby had become accidently locked in a vehicle.

The fire crew released the baby from the vehicle by making a forced entry using small tools.

Baxter’s joy at Nowell deal

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has spoken of his delight after Jack Nowell became the latest Exeter Chiefs player to commit his future to the Aviva Premiership club.

England international Nowell has today agreed terms on a new and improved contract that will keep him at Sandy Park until 2017.

Table cricket competition a big hit!

It was a boundary busting day of cricket as school teams from across the South West went head to head for the Table Cricket regional finals on 15 May.

Over 60 children flocked to the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Devon Cricket Centre, on the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus, for the event to play a specially adapted version of the sport which gives those with severe physical or learning disabilities the opportunity to compete.

Charity clean highlights beach litter problem

Staff from Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo, have led a clean-up of one of Torquay’s beaches.

Twenty-one volunteers joined workers from the charity to pick rubbish from Beacon Cove. But the clean has highlighted the scale of Torbay’s beach litter problem.

The haul included over 200 plastic items, including a bucket and a traffic cone, nearly 300 bits of paper, over 400 shards of glass and 170 pieces of metal, 90 of which were bottle caps. The total weight collected was over 31 kilos.

Bicton helps farmers in Uganda

Bicton College is currently training international student Joseph Mugagga as one of seven delegates funded to learn in the UK by the Bicton Overseas Agricultural Trust. Joseph, from Kampala in Uganda, works as a Rural Project Manager for Kulika Uganda, an organisation set up to promote and train individuals in sustainable agriculture.

As well as having his own family farm with his wife and brothers, Joseph has worked with farming groups across Uganda and currently reaches approximately 1800 farmers in the districts of Lira, Apac and Oyam. He promotes a holistic approach to farming...

ART EXTRA is a Charity Event on the 28th and 29th June 2014 at the 'Old Pavilion' near Honiton which aims to raise over £10,000 in support of local charity Hospiscare.

The three local organisers: Mary Ann Wilmot, Gill Coates and Debbie Luck hope to raise funds to help with the building and running of Hospiscare’s new day hospice which will serve East Devon.

The trio have brought together over 26 artists to exhibit their art with a large percentage of their sale proceeds going to the local charity.
