A survey carried out by local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, shows that many people in Exeter will struggle to deal with universal credit without support.
For most claimants, Universal Credit will eventually replace:
• Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Child Tax Credit • Working Tax Credit • Housing Benefit • Budgeting loans - an advance payment of UC will replace these.
Figures from the Devon Strategic Partnership Welfare Reform Advisory Group in August 2013 suggest that 157,000 people...
Exeter Phoenix is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Rachel Busby and David Webb, who each make work grounded in memory, nostalgia and a sense of place; each in their own way, appearing to weave a tentative path that fluctuates between representation and abstraction.
Both artists draw references from rich personal histories and the powerful agency of particular objects, locations and narratives. Rather than coalesce into tangible landscapes, interiors or still life imagery however, these allusions are fragmented, mapped out and reworked to capture an essence...
A flood defence wall damaged by the storms at the start of the year has been repaired.
Exeter City Council has funded the repairs to the wall at Bowling Green Marsh, Topsham.
Contractors working for the City Council began work on 28 April and have now finished on schedule.
A large section of the coastal defence alongside the River Clyst frontage was severely damaged during the high tides and storm damage in January and February. This resulted in a breach which allowed the high tides to overtop and flow into the protected land and inland road behind it. These raised...

The Chiefs have previously faced Connacht in two pre-season friendlies, but have never before faced either...
Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner is calling for action to prevent a continual drain on resources to support national policing. As part of the "mutual aid" agreement, the Devon and Cornwall force is required to provide officers for events such as the NATO summit and Olympics. However Tony Hogg is worried about the impact on effective local policing, particularly during the summer months when more than eight million people visit Devon and Cornwall.
Resources are already fully stretched during this period, and although money is refunded to the force for use of...

Men who keep a mobile phone in their trouser pocket could be inadvertently damaging their chances of becoming a father, according to a new study led by the University of Exeter. Previous research has suggested that Radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation (RF-EMR) emitted by the devices can have a detrimental effect on male fertility. Most of the global adult population own mobile phones, and around 14% of couples in high and middle income countries have difficulty conceiving. A team led by Dr Fiona Mathews, of Biosciences at the University of Exeter, conducted a systematic review of the...
