Event Date:
26/08/2014 - 10:00am to 13/09/2014 - 5:00pm
Venue:
Spacex Gallery, Preston Street, Exeter

In this installation, Phil Root references history and memory, producing artworks through a process of intuitive layering and erasure of both physical and historical attributes.

Upon entering the galleries, the viewer is confronted with a number of large plywood boards that act as display structures on which the artist composes arrangements of images, drawings, and objects. Defaced coins, foggy landscapes, and other inclusions of absence and obscurity are layered and tied on with sail rope, offering an allusion to sea crossing and trade, and also to the use and exchange values of...

04/10/2014 - 4:15pm to 22/11/2014 - 4:15pm
Venue:
Spacex Gallery, Preston Street, Exeter

In this solo exhibition at Spacex, Scott King presents a body of recent work that deals almost exclusively with notions of public art and its role within urban regeneration.

Presented as a series of prints, Anish and Antony Take Afghanistan, 2014, employs humour to explore the astonishing power of public art that has long been recognised by both western governments and ‘big business’ alike. With increasingly large public sculptures being commissioned to ‘regenerate’ ailing post-industrial areas, King asks, ‘what if this strategy were employed in an attempt to turn around the...

What happens when you want a different life to the one chosen for you? A story of desire, duty, deceit and revenge. An innovative re-telling of an ancient Welsh myth where nothing is quite as it seems.

Rose cannot remember what came before the house at the edge of the isolated forest. Gwynne says he magicked her out of the flowers, but she's not so sure. She has played the part of the perfect farmer’s wife for Lewis, who is kept firmly in place by his uncle Gwynne, and accepted her lonely existence. Then a stranger is seen in the forest. What lengths will she go to, to escape the...

The Shipwrecked House

Event Date:
29/09/2014 - 7:30pm
Venue:
Bike Shed Theatre, Exeter

Outside, a storm is raging. Inside, a darkened room preserves the fragments of a past underneath dust sheets. Sea-shells, voices, yellowing postcards: the flotsam and jetsam of a childhood spent beach-combing on the coast of Brittany. Stories emerge: of treasure found in tidal ponds, and women metamorphosing into serpents. But beneath the floorboards, the creaking groans of whales warn of unsettled futures.

In a sparkling one-woman performance that blends poetry with theatre, Anglo-Breton poet Claire Trévien navigates a shifting maritime landscape. Memory and myth from the Celtic...

When impoverished pearl-diver Kino finds the ‘pearl of the world’ he believes his family’s life will be transformed forever. Instead of bringing hope, the pearl leads Kino and his family down a dark and dangerous path. A timeless fable about the allure of wealth, the confines of class, and the redemptive power of love. The Pearl asks us to consider what we value most in the world. Dumbshow present their critically-acclaimed new adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic...
