Travellers invade Exeter sports pitches

Travellers have pitched up on council land - ruining the sporting activities of dozens of Exeter youngsters.

This picture, taken by Exeter Daily reader Smurf Coles, shows the vehicles which are believed to have arrived from the M5.

Exeter City Council this afternoon (Friday 5 September) confirmed that it had commenced legal action to take back possession of the land at Hamlin Lane playing fields.

Smurf said: "Why do they choose a children's play area where there are so many other places to go?"

Cyclist killed in A38 horror crash

A cyclist has died after an horrific crash involving a lorry on the Exeter-bound carriageway of the A38.

The incident happened at 10.53am yesterday (5th September) approximately one mile from Lee Mill. The 58-year-old cyclist was treated at the scene before being conveyed by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital with serious injuries. He later died. The A38, Exeter bound was closed for five hours while officers from the Serious Collisions investigation Unit carried out their inquiries. Chudleigh Christmas Fayre

Chudleigh’s Christmas season kicks off on Thursday 4th December with a Christmas Fayre in the town centre, organised by the Chudfest committee in partnership with Chudleigh Town Council and Chudleigh Business Guild.

The lights will be switched on during a parade by the town's children. Father Christmas will be receiving visitors in his grotto. There will be live entertainment throughout the evening and many of the shops will operate late night opening. There will be a craft fair and a Christmas market in the Town Hall, plus additional stalls on the street.

Chudfest Variety Concert

The line-up has been announced for the annual Chudleigh Variety Concert which is being held this year on Saturday 4th October.

Topping the bill will be magician and illusionist, Peter Baffles. He will be supported by a host of local performers: including: 2FiredUp (Gina Sherwood and Lisa Smith); soul singer Peter Robinson; Black Magic with their saucy and serious songs; and Chudleigh Shanty Men. The evening will be compered by Chudleigh’s own Tank Sherman.

This will be the fifth year the concert has been held and, as always, proceeds will go towards the Christmas Lights...

Garden and Produce Show

The Chudfest Garden and Produce show will be held on September 20th, in Chudleigh Town Hall. There will be classes for Flowers, Vegetables, Fruit, Kitchen Produce and Floral Art. There are also classes for children aged 10 or under. There is an engraved trophy for the overall winner, and various cups for particular classes or groups of classes.

Entries will need to be delivered to the Town hall by 10.45am on the day; the hall will be closed between 11am and 2pm for judging to take place; and the show will be open to the public at 2pm. Entries will cost 50p per class (children free...

Bag it. Beat it for BHF!

Princesshay has joined forces with British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops to launch their Bag It. Beat It. campaign, which urges the Exeter community to donate bags full of unwanted items.

Every bag donated will fund life-saving heart research, helping over 40,000 little heroes continue to fight congenital heart disease.

Before the BHF was founded, only one in five babies born with congenital heart disease saw their first birthday, let alone their first day of school. Thanks to pioneering research, now around 4,000 children are able to experience their first day of school...

Exeter pupils to design dream rugby shirts

A group of pupils from Isca School and St James School will be taking part in a workshop where they will design their school team’s rugby shirt, to be produced and donated by Canterbury, the official kit supplier to England Rugby and the Official Partner to All Schools.

The Canterbury kit design workshops are part of the All Schools programme which was launched in 2012 by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in partnership with the Rugby Football Foundation.

It is sometimes said that the environmental crisis is but a symptom of a deeper crisis, which is a spiritual one. I have a lot of sympathy with this suggestion, but what does it mean? Spirituality, in a general sense, has to do with what makes us tick. It draws on those aspects of life which we cannot measure such as beauty, joy, kindness, love, relatedness and purpose. Transport Minister visits station site

Transport Minister Baroness Kramer has today (Friday 5 September) visited the Newcourt railway station site in Exeter as work prepares to get underway.

The Minister cut a turf to mark the start of construction on the £1.5 million scheme.

The Devon County Council project is being part funded with £741,000 from the Department for Transport’s New Station Fund. It is one of only five stations awarded funding nationally, following a successful bid by the County Council. The other half of the scheme costs will be met by developer contributions.

New app a first for Exeter hotel

The Mercure Southgate Exeter has become the first hotel in the city to offer a mobile app so guests can check in before they arrive.

Swapping queues and form-filling for a welcome in the bar or lobby, guests will just need to pick up their key at the start of their stay, at the four star hotel in Southernhay.

The Southgate Exeter is one of just 60 Accor hotels across Europe that has the new mobile App facility.

The aim, says Sales Manager Tamsyn Parsons, is to make sure guests can start enjoying their stay straight away.
