Exeter Specsavers store has raised a fantastic £520 for Red Nose day.

Lillian-Evangelia Agelis, store director of Specsavers Exeter, said: "We enjoyed raising money for Red Nose Day as it’s such a great cause. All staff members took part and encouraged all of our customers to join in the fun!"

JustPark triples investment target on Crowdcube

JustPark, the pioneering app and website that connects parking space owners with drivers looking for a convenient space, has smashed its £1 million crowdfunding target by 370%, raising £3.7 million in 34 days through Crowdcube. While JustPark is still open to receiving expressions of interest, the campaign is officially closed to investment, having raised the maximum amount allowed for SMEs under EU regulation.

Musicians from the Exeter Symphony Orchestra hit a high note with pupils when they attended music lessons at Ladysmith Junior School.

The visit was part of an effort to bring to life the BBC’s Ten Pieces Project.

The local musicians volunteered their services after the orchestra was approached by teacher Kathy Rowden who said: “The Exeter Symphony Orchestra members helped the children understand more about how musicians have to work as team and that each instrument has different qualities and roles within the orchestra.”

Top British sailors from the Solitaire du Figaro race called in at Living Coasts to meet the penguins.

The eight, including South West sailors Sam Matson, Henry Bomby and Robin Elsey, dropped by to feed the penguins at Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium, which is hosting the media centre for the race when it comes to Torquay in June.

Ide man guilty of animal welfare offences

A man has been found guilty of offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 after failing to improve the squalid conditions he kept his ponies and dogs in, despite several warnings and advice from Devon and Somerset Trading Standards, the Police, the RSPCA and World Horse Welfare.

Leslie Weatherill, 73, of Ide appeared before Exeter Magistrates Court.

Bid to solve mysteries of flamingo fatherhood

A researcher at the University of Exeter has launched a bid to analyse the DNA of a group of flamingos in order to answer some of the questions surrounding paternity and social behaviour in the distinctive pink birds.

Paul Rose, a PhD student in the Centre for Research in Animal Behaviour, has been working with flamingos for three years at Slimbridge Wetlands Centre in Gloucestershire and is now embarking on a crowdfunding bid to genetically analyse who is related to who within the flock.
