Non-drug alternative to antidepressants

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) could provide an alternative non-drug treatment for people who do not wish to continue long-term antidepressant treatment, suggests new research carried out at the University of Exeter and published today in The Lancet.

The results come from the first ever large study to compare MBCT – structured training for the mind and body which aims to change the way people think and feel about their experiences – with maintenance antidepressant medication for reducing the risk of relapse in depression.

The four Rotary Clubs of Exeter have announced that their third Teddy Bear Parachute Jump event will take place on Cathedral Green on Saturday 2 May 2015 between 11am and 3pm, raising funds for Honeylands Children’s Charity in Exeter.

Cuckoos have suffered a huge population decline in recent years and in many parts of the country their distinctive call is no longer heard. Naomi will guide you on a fascinating walk in which you will learn more about the work being done to find out what is causing the population decline in this species.

Bell ringers celebrate 90th anniversary

Church bell ringers from across Devon will be coming together at Exeter Cathedral on Saturday (25 April) to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Devon Association of Ringers.

Bellringers are being invited from all over Devon to come to Exeter to ring for this historic event.

The bells will ring out across the city starting at 10.30am with a 10 bell competition, followed by an 8 bell competition in the afternoon. Concurrently a 6 bell competition will take place at St Petrock’s.

Missing man may be in Exeter area

Police are renewing their appeal for the public’s help in locating Gary Knight, 52, from Dawlish, who has been missing for over a week and may be in the Exeter area.

Gary (pictured) went missing from the Haldon Terrace area of Dawlish at around 11.30am on Sunday 12 April and officers are growing increasingly concerned for his welfare.

The last confirmed sighting of him was in the Gresham House Inn, Dawlish, on the night he went missing.

Officers have been searching and making enquiries in the Dawlish, Exeter and Torquay areas, but so far have been unable to locate...

A new manifesto, launched by national youth charity, YMCA, is calling on politicians from all political parties to consider the needs of young people, the future generation.
