Waldrom keen to build on win

Two-try hero Thomas Waldrom insists Exeter Chiefs always believed they could beat Clermont Auvergne despite going 14-3 down inside 20 minutes.

The Chiefs got stung by two early converted tries from Hosea Gear and Aurelin Rougerie but responded brilliantly with a brace from Waldrom and late scores from Don Armand and Mitch Lees.

It secured the bonus point for Rob Baxter’s side and puts them top of pool two after three games, ahead of next weekend’s vital return fixture in Clermont.

“It’s a big result,” said Waldrom, who scored tries in both halves. “We talked in the...

Increase in visitors to county libraries

Devon is continuing to lead the way nationally when it comes to library services.

Recent figures from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy’s (CIPFA) annual library survey showed that the number of libraries across Britain has fallen and visits to libraries are down by 3.9%. In the South West there has been a 1.4% fall in usage in the past year.

However, Devon is bucking the trend. Not only has it kept all 50 of the county’s libraries open, but over three million visits to Devon libraries in 2014/15 ensured a 10% increase across the county. PC and WiFi...

Isca Church held a big birthday party for Jesus!

Children came dressed in nativity costumes, the hall at St James School, Exeter, was decorated with banners and balloons and band members wore Santa hats.

Children joined in the nativity story, sang songs, played a game of pass the parcel, decorated crowns and after the service were given party bags which contained very loud party blowers which of course they loved!

Then it was time to cut the amazing birthday cake made by Heather Knee and tuck into party food brought by the congregation.

Once more our senses are being bombarded with manufactured images and messages of totally irrelevant and mostly unneeded seasonal tat.

It is nigh impossible to escape the Christmas kitsch which pushes us to value ourselves by what we buy, never mind the costs of consumerism to other people, other places or the planet. As long as the tills keep ringing, we can forget the bells.

So what is really at the heart of the Christmas story? In one word - ‘hospitality’.

We have an unmarried pregnant woman, marginalised in her own culture in an army-occupied land which is harsh...
