Blog: Student Life #10

One place arguably essential to student life, wherever you’re at university, is a good pub. I’m not a heavy drinker, I’m probably the lightest drinker possible to still be classes as a “drinker” so I don’t mean students need a good pub to get drunk, just to have a relaxed environment for socialising with friends.

The Victoria Inn, aka The Vic, can be found on Victoria Street; that’s not too hard to remember. With reasonably priced food and drinks, a friendly atmosphere and a location close to most student housing, it’s the ideal pub for students. The Ram on campus is okay but if...

Exeter shoppers thanked for donations to charity appeal

Princesshay says a big thank you to its shoppers for donating to its British Heart Foundation (BHF) Bag It. Beat It. event helping the charity generate over 1 million bags of donated items.

The centre encouraged shoppers to give bags of unwanted items including clothes, CDs, DVDs and bric-à-brac.

The items now go on to be sold in local BHF shops helping to fund lifesaving heart research and raise awareness of the devastating effects a sudden heart disease diagnosis can have on an entire family.

Wayne Pearce, Princesshay’s Centre Director, commented: “It’s been great...

Firewood, hedges and hedge-laying event

The Donkey Sanctuary and Devon Hedge Group are holding a community woodfuel-from-hedges day at The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth on Thursday 17 December 2015 from 9:30am until 4:30pm.

The Donkey Sanctuary’s collaboration with Devon Hedge Group, to create traditionally managed hedges, is one of a number of new initiatives underway to optimise conservation and restore natural habitats at its Devon and Dorset-based farms, where many thousands of donkeys are cared for.

“This is a terrific opportunity for people with woodfuel heating to learn how to harvest their own wood from...

Exeter City emphatic winners!

Exeter City are through to the Third Round of the FA Cup for the first time in a decade as substitute Ollie Watkins secured Exeter City’s place with a composed finish two minutes before the end of normal time.

In a game in which the Grecians outclassed their League One opponents, Jordan Tillson had put the hosts ahead after nineteen minutes. City crafted several chances and in truth should have secured their place in Monday night’s FA Cup third-round draw with more time to spare, but it was to be Ollie Watkins that would have the final say, potentially setting up a tie against...

More than 150 children queued to see Santa at a Christmas fair held in Beacon Heath over the weekend.

It was worth the wait as they entered Santa’s Winter Wonderland of magical lights and snow at the Beacon Heath Children’s Centre, while next door in The Beacon Centre there were lots of Christmas stalls, carols by the Hospiscare Choir and a café.

Stalls included Devon Refugee Support, the Labour Party cake stall, Hospiscare, Traid Craft, Willowbrook School and the Campaign for Eastern Fields.

This was the first public event to be held at The Beacon, new community...

Christmas is fast approaching, and as ever looks set to be a busy and potentially stressful time.

While 43% of people feel that buying presents is the main worry at Christmas, cooking Christmas dinner comes second along with family arguments!

That’s not surprising, considering that nearly a third of people will be eating Christmas dinner with more than seven guests and nearly half will spend over five hours preparing and cooking the festive meal.

If you’re worried about the fast-approaching festive season, one thing you definitely don’t want to add to your concerns...

A bill to strengthen and clarify the law on pavement parking was withdrawn last week (4 December) following a commitment from Government to undertake a policy review and convene a round table next year to further examine the implications of any legislative change.

The Pavement Parking Private Members’ Bill called for the law on pavement parking to be strengthened – only allowing people to park on pavements that have been specially designated to allow it, making it the exception rather than the rule.

Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking has worked with the...

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has this morning confirmed that England international Henry Slade was assessed by medical staff last night on his return from the Aviva Premiership game away to Wasps.

Baxter said: "Henry has an injury to the lower part of his right leg and it is envisaged he will operated on sometime today (Sunday). At the moment we have set no timescale on how long he will be sidelined for. A more detailed assessment will be made following the operation."

This is the only comment the Chiefs will be making on the injury to Henry Slade.
