Exeter wins recognition at awards ceremonies

Exeter has won recognition at a number of influential awards ceremonies.

Local authorities Exeter City Council and Teignbridge District Council were singled out for their role in putting on the highly successful BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend at Powderham Castle.

Working in partnership, the two councils won the Tourism Event of the Year Award at the English Riviera and South Devon Tourism and Hospitality Awards.

Fifty thousand people attended the Big Weekend at the end of May, witnessing some of the best bands in the business, including Coldplay and Mumford and Sons....

Chiefs side to face Gloucester

Rob Baxter says it’s only right that the pressure is heaped on his Exeter Chiefs side every time they take to the field at Sandy Park.

Having lost only once on home soil last season - that was to eventual English and European champions Saracens - Baxter is keen for his team to create another solid home foundation from which they look to attack on all fronts.

Already this season Saracens again showed how he could be done, winning 34-13 in Devon last month, but a week later the Chiefs were back on song, seeing off Harlequins with a five-try blast in their 36-25 success....

Comedy at the Park

Sandy Park's popular Comedy at the Park returns on Friday, 2nd December from 7pm.

The evening will be MC-ed by Carly Smallman, described as 'the most exciting female act in the country right now.' First up is Trevor Crook, a deadpan Australian - 'one of Australia's most successful comics in the UK'. Next up is Simon Clayton, a 'likeable, fast-thinking Londoner' followed by John Robertson who's 'cheeky, brilliant, funny and sharp'.

Doors will open at 7pm with food available immediately and the comedians will begin at 8pm. The evening will finish at approximately 10.30pm....

Exeter School library celebrates 10th anniversary

Exeter School's library celebrated its 10th anniversary with a poetry event to tie in with National Poetry Day and 400 years of Shakespeare on Tuesday 4 October.

The School House Library, named after its origins as the boarding accommodation (dormitories and studies, called study row) when the school accepted boarders, was the venue for pupils, staff, guests, Governors and alumni to enjoy refreshments and tours by pupil guides which showcased the library's extensive facilities.

Zero tolerance to hate crime is the strong message at the core of the new anti-hate crime campaign being launched across Devon during this year’s national hate crime awareness week, which runs from 8th to 15th October.

The message is loud and clear: all forms of hate crime are completely unacceptable and will be dealt with robustly. Together with Devon & Cornwall Police, partner agencies and community leaders across Devon are working to prevent hate crime, support victims and deal with the perpetrators in the most appropriate manner.

A talk by local historian Todd Gray, looking at life in Devon and the context of Poltimore and Bampfylde House in Exeter.

Devon history has been enriched by Dr Gray who is unrivalled in his knowledge of the county, having published 45 books about Devon. In 2014 he was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List for voluntary services to Devon heritage.

Councillors back plans for redevelopment of Exeter bus station

Plans for the multi-million pound redevelopment of Exeter bus station have been approved by councillors. At a special meeting on Wednesday evening members of Exeter City Council’s planning committee backed applications to create a state-of-the art new leisure complex and a new bus station at the site. Both schemes are being funded by the city council. Work is expected to begin next spring and the new developments are expected to open in the winter of 2018.
