Free places on offer at Exeter School

Exeter School is delighted to offer eight free places to children from the local community. The co-educational independent school for children aged 7 – 18 has received sufficient donations and legacies from former pupils, in addition to ongoing grants from a local charity, to create eight bursaries for children from Exeter. New figures released by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) show residents in Devon and Cornwall raised an incredible £298,635 for the charity’s life saving research last year by fundraising in their community. A Mid Devon primary has been recognised as a happy and vibrant place in which to learn and work.

Independent education inspectors say that Sandford School should retain the rating of good that it was awarded in 2012.

Under the leadership of new head, Lois Briard, the inspectors say that the school continues to improve and attract more children.

Newton Abbot Racecourse announces £1m prize money commitment for 2017

Following the Easter Saturday season fixture, Newton Abbot Racecourse has confirmed another record year of committed prize money for 2017.

Over the course of the 2017 season, over £1million in prize money will be spread across the 18 fixtures which will take place between April and October.

This year, the minimum amount of prize money on offer will be: £6,000 for all Class 5 hurdles, £6,750 for all Class 5 chases, £7,250 for all Class 4 hurdles and £7,500 for all Class 4 chases.

Thousands flock to bank holiday food festival

The early May Bank Holiday weekend saw Exeter’s Northernhay Gardens and Castle Courtyard transformed into a foodie’s paradise as the 14th Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink sprang up.

Crowds gathered to see hundreds of local producers, top chefs including Tom Kerridge, Michael Caines MBE, Simon Hulstone, Michael Wignall, Paul Ainsworth, Josh Eggleton and Mark Dodson, family activities, masterclasses and freshly cooked locally-sourced street food.

Six gardens near Kingsteignton will be opening their gates to members of the public, to raise vital funds for Rowcroft Hospice in June. The ‘Orchard Open Gardens’ event will take place on 18 June from 12 noon to 5pm. Entry will be £5 per person, with free entry for children. A multi-trade craftsman at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital has raised hundreds of pounds for local charities thanks to his unusual sci-fi hobby.
