The results of the RICS UK Residential Market Survey, April 2017, general consensus point to new instructions continue to drop in the region. A memorial plaque commemorating Penguin Books founder Sir Allen Lane was unveiled today (10 May) at Exeter St David’s railway station. The orange plaque, commissioned by Sir Allen Lane’s daughter Clare Morpurgo and designed by Penguin Random House, recognises Sir Allen’s contribution to British publishing and commemorates the location where he conceived the iconic sixpenny paperback. For the first time, the sixpenny paperback made quality literature accessible to a wide audience, sparking the paperback revolution and the beginning of Penguin Books.

Motorists are being asked to help save lives by lending their support to My Red Thumb Day (Thursday 11 May).

The annual campaign highlights the dangers of driving and riding while using hand-held mobile devices. To coincide with the day, #MyRedThumb has launched a new road safety video which aims to encourage passengers to speak out against drivers using their phones in order to help reduce the risk of a crash.

Local artisans and talented crafts people are coming together to exhibit at the Devon County Show on May 18, 19 and 20 held at Westpoint, Exeter.

A collection of soap makers, leather workers, jewellers, artists, candle makers and many others will be setting up shop in a canvas marquee which would easily cover a premier league football pitch.

The Crafts and Gardens feature is nearly 12,000 square metres and will highlight the popularity of hand-made items, often using centuries-old techniques.

Exeter Homes Trust, formerly known as The Exeter Municipal Charity, is hosting an event on 12 May to celebrate the completion of remodelling work at the historic Magdalen Cottages and the organisation’s rebrand.

The 150-year old Grade II listed cottages, situated in the St Leonard’s area of the city, have undergone an 18-month programme of work to provide residents with 13 remodelled apartments, across two floors. The launch will be the last public engagement for Lord Mayor, Councillor Cynthia Thompson, before she steps down from office, after a successful 12-month term.
