Farmwise Devon expands to reach more children and teachers

Two randomly selected Devon teachers attending this year’s Farmwise Devon event at Westpoint, Exeter, have won free places to take part in the campaign's first teacher training programme on food and farming.

1,400 children from 32 schools attended this week's event, sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers. Children were taken on a journey from field to fork, enjoying practical and hands on tasks through 12 educational zones including Beef, Fruit, Forestry, Dairy and Arable.

Brian to tackle ultra-distance cycle race across America

An on-call firefighter at Danes Castle will be taking part in the Trans-America Bike Race in June 2018 to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity and Wooden Spoon Devon.

The race involves cycling 4,300 miles across 10 US states in around a month.

Brian Murray retired as Chief Fire Officer from Highlands and Islands Fire Service in 2010 after a 30-year career, having served in numerous brigades and at the Fire Service College.

Overnight closure of Bridge Road on Thursday 19 October

Bridge Road in Exeter will be closed overnight on Thursday (19 October). The road will be closed overnight from 8:30pm and will re-open at 5:30am the following morning (Friday 20 October). New wildlife conservation areas proposed for Exe Estuary

A report suggesting new areas for nature was published on Friday 13 October. The areas aim to balance tourism, business and leisure needs with the role of the Exe Estuary as a sanctuary for internationally important wildlife and natural habitat.

Advice from conservation experts urge that new ‘Wildlife Refuges’ are implemented to make sure protected birds are undisturbed and have safe places to rest and feed. Gusts of more than 50mph are predicted as ex-hurricane Ophelia tracks towards the UK.
