Interest rate rise could compound people’s money problems, says Citizens Advice Exeter

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, has responded to the decision of the Bank of England to raise the base rate for the first time in a decade to 0.5%.

Steve Barriball, Citizens Advice Exeter Chief Executive, said: “The interest rate rise risks compounding the problems of people already in financial difficulty.

Pensioner rescued from bungalow by fire crews

Three fire appliances from Dawlish, Middlemoor and Teignmouth were mobilised following a call from a distressed female occupant of a property at Sercombes Gardens, Starcross.

The pensioner told emergency call handlers that she had a fire in her house and they could hear that her alarms had activated.

Due to the caller only being able to pass a partial address at time of call, Fire Control and crews worked together to locate the property at just after 6pm today.

After locating the property and investigating with 2 breathing apparatus wearers, a small fire was located...

The search for the new Miss England has started.

One winner will be crowned Miss England South West in May who will then represent Devon and Cornwall in the finals of Miss England 2018. The runner up will also be sent to the Miss England Finals 2018 to represent their county.

The current winner is Therapy Radiographer Stephanie Hill from Hope Valley Derbyshire who is proudly representing England at Miss World in Sanya China.

More than 100 jobseekers attended the Recruit Princesshay jobs fair, helping to match local people to 50 retail and restaurant vacancies on offer, both at Exeter’s Princesshay and elsewhere in the city.

British Red Cross to recruit community reserve volunteers – ready to help crisis-hit Devon communities

The British Red Cross in Devon has launched a campaign to recruit hundreds of volunteers willing to drop everything during a major emergency to help people in crisis in their own community.

When disaster hits, ‘Community Reserve Volunteers’ will form a practical taskforce, working as a team to do anything from filling sandbags to sorting food for their community.

Police appeal after Ebford burglary

Police are appealing for information following a burglary to a residential property in Ebford.

The incident took place on Old Ebford Lane near Exeter on the 19th October between 9am-5pm.

Numerous items of jewellery and cash were stolen; damage was also caused to a rear patio door.

A leopard brooch 9ct sapphire spots ruby eyes diamond collar, and a solid heavy Ankh 14kt gold with chain were both taken.
