Professor boosts dementia expertise at Exeter

A professor who is an expert in older people’s medicine has further bolstered Exeter’s research expertise in dementia.

Professor Louise Allan has joined the University of Exeter Medical School from Newcastle University. The Professor of Geriatric Medicine has a specialist interest in the neurology and psychiatry of old age.

Her current research focuses on falls and physical health care in dementia, the effects of delirium on decline in brain health, and non-Alzheimer’s dementias including post-stroke dementia and Lewy body disease.

Free parachute display at historic Army concerts in Exeter

CONCERT goers will be treated to a free parachute display at next week’s (5th, 6th, 7th July) historic series of musical events at Wyvern Barracks in Exeter.

“100 Years Behind the Red Brick Wall” will see three evenings of open-air concerts and displays telling the story of Wyvern Barracks and its soldiers, from 1918 to the present day.

Waning over river dangers as hot weather continues

People are being warned about the dangers of swimming in or jumping into rivers or canals.

The warning comes from Exeter City Council as the hot weather continues.

It follows a spate of incidents where people have been jumping into the Exeter Canal, some at Double Locks.

Signs have been put up warning people about the dangers of drowning as well as the disturbance to wildlife. The move has been backed by the Fire Service and the Environment Agency.

A £1,000 donation from a local housebuilder is supporting a four-year-old with cerebral palsy in her daily life.

Persimmon Homes South West has made the donation to help Madeline Bell, from Willand, Cullompton, in her efforts to become more independent and to ease some of the painful side effects of her condition.

Former Exeter Chiefs star Matt Jess and GB cycling international Lauren Dolan have joined the South West Rotary Youth Games as official ambassadors. The Cornwall-raised Jess spent nine seasons with the Chiefs, a period that included promotion to the Premiership, an Anglo-Welsh Cup Triumph and 2017’s famous Premiership title victory. New on-street parking restrictions for campervans and motorhomes come into effect in Exmouth from Monday (2 July).
