This September 8th -23rd, Devon Open Studios showcases the talent and creative lives of the artists who live and work in Devon, when hundreds of artists are the stars of the show as they open their studios to the public.

Imagine finding free art exhibitions everywhere you go, with the unique chance to enter the personal space of an artist, talk to them about their work and buy art directly without paying a gallery commission. Thanks to their family of inspiring volunteers and funding from Arts Council England, they are delighted to present a season of extraordinary world class performances live in villages across Devon.

This autumn you’ll find theatre, dance, circus, poetry, laughter, puppetry, and music from across the world in village halls, churches and community spaces. You can expect cups of tea, homemade cakes and a warm welcome wherever you go.

Seaton Wetlands to release over 150 water voles next month

East Devon District Council's countryside team along with the Axe Vale & District Conservation Society will be boosting the water vole population at Seaton Wetlands next month (September) in a major reintroduction programme.

Nationally, water voles have suffered decline due to loss of habitat, an increase in predation from non-native American mink and increasing urbanisation. The exciting Water Vole Project will see a phased release of the water voles at Seaton Wetlands, into prime habitat suitable for them to thrive.

The Devon Summer Tour, a cycling challenge for new and experienced cyclists, has drawn to a close with the winners awarded prizes for riding and encouraging others.

The programme, which started in July, was run by Love to Ride and Devon County Council to celebrate the Tour of Britain returning to Devon in September. People were encouraged to form a social team of six riders, like in the Tour of Britain. 247 organisations now take part in Love to Ride’s challenges with 4,964 people cycling over 3 million miles so far. The Masonic Charitable Foundation combined with the Devonshire freemasons have recently given a £3,500 grant to the Devon Link-Up Organisation and Rt. W. Bro. Ian Kingsbury JP The Provincial Grand Master of Devonshire recently went to meet their committee and members of the groups they aim to help and support, to present them with a certificate to commemorate the association between the two organisations.

Brave American Soldier born in Exeter to be remembered 100 years after he was killed

A soldier of the First World War who was born and brought up in Exeter, will be remembered at a public event taking place in the Higher Cemetery of the city on Saturday 15th September, 100 years after he was killed in action.

Walter Hooper grew up at 97 Portland Street before he emigrated with his uncle to America in 1914, the First World War began just a few weeks later.

When United States joined the war in 1917 Walter enlisted with the American Expeditionary Force and served in France as a Private. He was killed in July 1918 aged 21 and was buried in France.
