One thousand keen-eyed volunteers are required to count one of the UK's most elusive birds in more than a thousand woods across the UK. The 2013 national woodcock survey is being organised by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) and the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).

Footage captured by a citizen at the scene, shows the moment that police tasered a knife-wielding man outside Buckingham Palace on Sunday.

40-year-old sexual offender sent to prison for three years

Michael Callon, a 40 year old health care assistant from St Ives was today (Thursday 31st January) sentenced to three years imprisonment at Truro Crown Court for sexual offences committed against two vulnerable women.

Callon was employed by the Cornwall Foundation Trust and during the period June 2008 to April 2011 in his professional capacity he provided mental health support to two female clients, both resident in the Penzance area.

Fugitive returned following arrest in Cambodia

Interagency working across the globe has resulted in a West Country fugitive being arrested in Cambodia and returned to prison. Andrew Wallace, 39, from Bridgwater, was sentenced to 24 months in prison in May 2010 following an investigation into human trafficking.

He was released from Channings Wood prison in Newton Abbot in December 2010 but breached his license and flew to Thailand.

Police are trying to locate the whereabouts of Kharim Rhony, a 15-year-old boy missing from foster parents. He was last seen at his address in the Stoke area of Plymouth intending to go swimming at the Life Centre.

Huge wildlife haven to be created at Meeth

A vast wildlife haven is to be created at the former Meeth Quarry, a 150-hectare site recently purchased by the Devon Wildlife Trust thanks to funding from Viridor Credits Environmental Company and generous individual donors.
