Exeter Chiefs chairman says new American owners will bring ‘razzmatazz’ to rugby union

Exeter Chiefs chairman Tony Rowe believes that the club’s impending takeover by an American consortium could transform the Gallagher Premiership.

The billionaire owners of English Premier League club Bournemouth have agreed a deal for the club, subject to the membership’s approval at an extraordinary general meeting on May 7.

If the deal is ratified, Exeter Chiefs will become the latest Premiership team alongside Newcastle and Bath to secure major new investment.

City 0 Tranmere Rovers 1

James Norwood’s deflected volley in the first-half was enough for Tranmere Rovers to overcome Exeter City at St James Park, despite a spirited fightback from the Grecians in the second half.

Boss Matt Taylor made two changes from the side that conceded late in Tuesday night’s draw in Lincoln City, with Lee Holmes and Randell Williams returning to the starting XI over Aaron Martin and Ryan Bowman.

It was the visitors who started the brighter of the two sides, with a flurry of chances to shoot following Ben Pringle’s free-kick into a dangerous area after five minutes, but...

Make no mistake, this was a brutal battle.

Fighting it out in the quest for valuable league points, by the time these two Premiership heavyweights wake-up tomorrow, the blood may have been vanished, but the scars of battle will still be clearly evident.

In the end, it was Exeter Chiefs who delivered the telling blows, maintaining their three-point lead at the top of the Gallagher Premiership by flooring rivals Sale Sharks for a second time this season.

First half tries from Ollie Devoto and Don Armand paved the way for their latest triumph, after which replacement...

Chiefs side to face Sale Sharks

Rob Hunter says Exeter Chiefs will need to be at their best as they look to preserve their lead at the top of the Gallagher Premiership.

Tomorrow, the Devonians tackle Sale Sharks at the AJ Bell Stadium (3pm) in a fixture forwards coach Hunter insists is ‘one of the hardest’ in the division.

With just eight rounds of the regular season remaining, the jostling for positions at either end of the Premiership table is intensifying by the week.

It is therefore little wonder that coaches across the division are demanding their teams show the necessary fight as every...

Lincoln City 1 City 1

Exeter City were denied all three points away at league leaders Lincoln City by an injury-time equaliser from the hosts.

The Grecians put in a superb display and led for the majority of the match as Matt Jay got is second goal in as many games, but a long throw into the box, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, allowed John Akinde to fire a shot towards the bottom corner that took a memorable victory away from City with seconds of the match remaining.

Matt Taylor made three changes from the side that had beaten Crewe Alexandra last time out, as Dean Moxey dropped out of...

West Country clashes on the sporting field have a long and legendary history but there was a match up with a difference this week where youngsters from the Lord’s Taverners Wicketz projects in Plymouth and Bristol came together for a day of competition and life skills workshops.

The festival at the Devon Cricket Centre in Exeter on Tuesday saw 40 children aged 8-12 from the two projects unite to celebrate all that is good about playing cricket together.

The Wicketz programme, run by leading youth and disability sport charity the Lord’s Taverners, gives opportunities to...

Grecians back to winning ways

Exeter City returned to winning ways with an excellent 2-1 win over Crewe Alexandra away from home in Sky Bet League Two.

The Grecians went ahead through Jake Taylor's deflected effort early on before Chris Porter headed home just after half-time.

But Matt Jay netted his first league goal of the season when he popped up with an excellent curled effort to give the Grecians all three points.

Manager Matt Taylor made two changes to the side that began the narrow defeat against Bury last time out as Jay and Kane Wilson came into the starting line-up in Cheshire....

Rob Baxter hopes a return to home comforts tomorrow will help provide him and his Exeter Chiefs with the perfect foundation from which to attack visiting Newcastle Falcons in the Gallagher Premiership (2:30pm).

Defeat away to Gloucester a week ago saw the Devonians surrender top spot in the division, albeit on points difference to defending champions Saracens, but Baxter believes being back on familiar surroundings can ensure normal service is resumed at the first attempt.

It's been six weeks since the Chiefs last ran out at home - that was against Castres in the Heineken...

Exeter Racecourse is one of a number of venues to have scheduled horse racing meetings cancelled following an outbreak of equine flu.

Upon discovering positive cases of the highly contagious virus in horses trained by Cheshire handler Donald McCain and Newmarket trainer Simon Crisford, the sport's governing body, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), called a temporary halt to competition.

A six-day blanket ban meant the traditional card at Exeter on the second Sunday in February was one of 23 meetings that could not go ahead. The McCain stable had runners at the West...

The Healthy Pets Devon National takes centre stage at Exeter Racecourse next Friday (Feb 22) where racecourse director and former champion point-to-point rider Polly Gundry will be hoping to keep the crown in Devon for the second year running.

Polly, who trains racehorses near Ottery St Mary, is planning to run her popular bay Dawson City who won the race last year.

Andrew Thornton, who has since retired, was in the saddle, and when the pair galloped to victory, cheers could be heard across Haldon forest, such was the popularity of the win.
