Chiefs Women sign Lola Whitley from Gloucester-Hartpury

Exeter Chiefs Women have signed versatile forward Lola Whitley from Gloucester-Hartpury.

The 21-year-old is equally comfortable at lock and in the back-row and played for England U20s last year.

Initially more of a fan of athletics, 100 metres and high jump in particular, Whitley began playing rugby at Sudbury RFC aged 13 when a friend dragged her along to a game. She started off on the wing and scored 10 tries in that first match.

She said: “I was pretty awful, but I just loved running though people!”

The sports industry in the UK has grown significantly over the past 10 years. There are now ample opportunities, along with a healthier interest in sports across the country. However, as much as the industry has progressed, there are still numerous challenges faced within the sector. Here, we’ll look at just some of the challenges the sports industry is facing in the UK today.

Funding

Like most sectors, funding remains a challenge within the sporting sector, both for those looking to break into the industry, and for community sport organisations looking for help with...

City 2 Northampton Town 2

A devastating last-minute Northampton equaliser saw Ex City held to a draw against the Cobblers at St James Park.

City took the lead through captain Jake Taylo, who netted his first of the season, before Billy Waters levelled for the away side.

Jayden Stockley then struck late in the first half to give City a 2-1 lead, but City were pegged back once again on 90 minutes when a Northampton corner seemed to come off a City player and end up in the back of the net meaning the points were shared.

Grecians boss Matt Taylor made four changes to the side that was eliminated...

Topsham Town FC has kicked off the new season in style thanks to a donation from a national housebuilder.

Bloor Homes, which is building its Seabrook Orchards development in Topsham, gifted the club £500 to replace the first team’s five-year old home strip with a brand new yellow and blue kit.

The first team, which plays in the Devon and Exeter Premier League, is predominantly funded through memberships and was keen to purchase a new home kit, as the old one was starting to show noticeable signs of wear and tear.

Honiton-based, “Say Yes To Life” Karate club came Runners-up in the medal table at the annual Seiwakai Open International Karate tournament in London on Sunday at the club’s very first competitive appearance.

Say Yes To Life teaches traditional Goju-Ryu Karate (as seen in the original Karate Kid movie with ‘Mr Miyagi’ and ‘Daniel Son’). Sport karate is only occasionally taught which makes the team’s success at the tournament even more noteworthy.

In total, the club entered 26 competitors in 43 events to represent England against countries such as Holland, Hungary, Poland,...

City 2 Bristol Rovers 0

Joel Randall scored his first senior goal for Exeter City as they beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 to top their Checkatrade.com Trophy group.

The Grecians went into the final game of the group knowing they had already qualified for the knockout stages, but also that only a win against Bristol Rovers in 90 minutes would be good enough to top the table.

And they rose to the challenge as Jonathan Forte flicked home Chiedozie Ogbene's low cross shortly into the second half before Randall added his strike eight minutes' from time.

Both teams named youthful sides for the game,...

Hogg 'excited' about Chiefs move

Stuart Hogg says he’s “excited” at the challenge that lies ahead after he today sealed a move to Gallagher Premiership outfit Exeter Chiefs. The 26-year-old will head to Sandy Park at the start of next season on a two-year deal, bringing to a close a hugely successful spell with Glasgow Warriors. The Scotland and British Lions full-back is Rob Baxter’s first confirmed signing ahead of the 2019/20 season, but his arrival will be seen as significant one for the Devonians, who have established themselves as one of the leading clubs not just in England, but in Europe as well in recent years. “...

Grecians exit Emirates FA Cup despite sprited second half display

Exeter City fell to a 3-2 defeat in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup against Blackpool.

Three first-half goals for the Tangerines gave the visitors what proved to be an unassailable lead at St James Park, despite a phenomenal effort from the Grecians in the second-half that left them a goal short of what would have been an incredible second-half comeback.

Matt Taylor made changes to last week’s starting XI in response to the sheer number of injuries the Grecians are struggling with at the moment, and fielded a very youthful bench to complement a side bereft of some...
