Italian international Varney settles in Devon with new contract

Exeter Chiefs and Italian international scrum-half Stephen Varney has signed a new contract with the club, kicking off an exciting start to the second half of Chiefs’ 2025/26 campaign.

Now an integral part of the game plan for both club and country, Varney has enjoyed an impressive start to his Chiefs career playing in eight out of 13 games so far this season.

Varney said: “I’m delighted to be re-signing with Chiefs. Although I’ve only been here for this season, it’s been a place I’ve really enjoyed from day one.

“The group of players, the staff, and the...

Northampton 2 City 1

Exeter City suffered back-to-back defeats as goals from Aaron Pierre and Andy Williams condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at Northampton Town.

The Grecians, who struggled to create chances in the first half, were much better after the break and pulled a goal back through Aaron Martin but couldn’t find an equaliser.

City manager Matt Taylor made four changes from the side that lost to Tranmere Rovers last time out as Jonathan Forte, Alex Hartridge, Aaron Martin and Nicky Law all came into the team at the expense of Pierce Sweeney, Randell Williams, Lee Holmes and Donovan Wilson...

Chiefs side to face Worcester Warriors

Rob Baxter will take nothing for granted when his Exeter Chiefs side travel to Worcester Warriors in tomorrow's Gallagher Premiership clash at Sixways (3pm).

Although the two rivals are at opposite ends of the table, the Devonians know from past experience that any drop in standard can potentially lead to disaster.

Last season, the Warriors were the only side to down the Chiefs on home soil in the Premiership, and it's for that very reason that Baxter has issued a note of caution to his players.

Add into the mix also that the Midlanders lost last weekend at bottom...

A number of winners at Exeter Racecourse throughout the National Hunt horse racing season go on the four-day Cheltenham Festival on March 12-15, with live chances of following up on their exploits in Devon.

Although the Cheltenham track is configured left-handed and races at Exeter are staged the other way around, the undulating and testing nature of going up into the Haldon Hills can be ideal preparation. With that in mind, here are four Exeter winners to follow at the Festival.

1. Defi Du Seuil

Van Der Sluys leaves the Chiefs

Wilhelm Van Der Sluys has bid an emotional farewell to Exeter Chiefs, bringing to an end his two-season association with the Gallagher Premiership club.

The South African-born forward said his goodbyes to everyone at Sandy Park on Tuesday, before jetting back to his homeland to take up a contract offer with Super Rugby outfit, the Lions.

The 27-year-old was brought to Devon by Chiefs Director of Rugby Rob Baxter in July 2017 from the Kings initially on a one-year deal, but he did enough during that first season to convince Baxter to prolong his stay.

Who are La liga top scorers this season?

The season in La Liga is gradually coming to an end. Very soon we will know the name of the champion, but the owner of the Pichichi trophy is already quite obvious. If nothing changes, then the list of the la liga top scorers will once again be topped by Lionel Messi.

In the current season, the Argentinean once again proves that he has no equals in the world. Moreover, in many matches he almost single-handedly pulled off all Barcelona moments and took the whole game into his own hands. Of course, the partners trust Messi, and this is not surprising at all. In the current season, he...

England Women’s Marlie Packer and Lagi Tuima have visited Sandy Park ahead of round four of the Women’s Six Nations where England will take on Italy on Saturday, March 9 (12.05pm).

With over 9,700 tickets currently sold, the upcoming game will be a record breaker in terms of number of tickets sold to a Red Roses’ home fixture outside of a Women’s Rugby World Cup.

As well as meeting with a number of stakeholders from local clubs, universities, colleges and Exeter City Council, Packer and Tuima spent the morning with over 100 girls and the Exeter Chiefs Community department...

City 0 Tranmere Rovers 1

James Norwood’s deflected volley in the first-half was enough for Tranmere Rovers to overcome Exeter City at St James Park, despite a spirited fightback from the Grecians in the second half.

Boss Matt Taylor made two changes from the side that conceded late in Tuesday night’s draw in Lincoln City, with Lee Holmes and Randell Williams returning to the starting XI over Aaron Martin and Ryan Bowman.

It was the visitors who started the brighter of the two sides, with a flurry of chances to shoot following Ben Pringle’s free-kick into a dangerous area after five minutes, but...

Sale Sharks 14 Exeter Chiefs 20

Make no mistake, this was a brutal battle.

Fighting it out in the quest for valuable league points, by the time these two Premiership heavyweights wake-up tomorrow, the blood may have been vanished, but the scars of battle will still be clearly evident.

In the end, it was Exeter Chiefs who delivered the telling blows, maintaining their three-point lead at the top of the Gallagher Premiership by flooring rivals Sale Sharks for a second time this season.

First half tries from Ollie Devoto and Don Armand paved the way for their latest triumph, after which replacement...
