Exeter Racecourse launches Community Raceday and calls for Devon’s community heroes

Exeter Racecourse has launched a brand-new Community Raceday and is inviting people across Devon to nominate a community hero who deserves recognition.

Community Raceday takes place on Friday, February 20, during half term, and coincides with Devon Day at the racecourse. The initiative celebrates the people who make a real difference in their communities – from volunteers and carers to sports coaches, fundraisers and quiet grafters who go above and beyond.

Every nominee will receive a free ticket to Exeter Racecourse, and one overall winner will be treated to a Family...

New first hole for EGCC

With the alterations under-way, Exeter Golf and Country Club has opened the first of the re-developed holes which is part of the new golf course design.

Golf Captains, John Fairman and Jackie Follett opened the new golf hole on Friday 5th June.

The hole will be played as the 16th this season and measures at 146 yards with a large, new teeing ground, renovated bunkers and widened green, which modernise the hole, demonstrating how length is not the only factor in creating a demanding par 3.

Bicton stages six day showjumping bonanza

Hundreds of showjumpers will be heading to the popular East Devon venue when it stages its most ambitious show to date Bicton Arena will be staging the biggest show in its history when a six day long showjumping spectacular begins on June 12.

Eight hundred horses will be jumping over the six days in three arenas over heights ranging from 80cms to a 1.40m Grand Prix, sponsored by Stockdale Asset Management.

Exeter City Exiles defeat Ydrousa on Andros

The Exiles, a group of Exeter City supporters based away from Devon, came out as penalty shoot-out winners after a high-scoring draw in their annual friendly fixture against the locals in Ydrousa.

It is the eighth year that the Exiles have played a friendly game against Ydrousa, a town on the island of Andros, and each year it throws up an entertaining fixture with a competitive and cordial rivalry.

This time around, the travelling City fans were the winners – triumphing 4-3 on penalties, after drawing 8-8 at the final whistle.

Exeter girl wins Silverstone rally competition

Silverstone Rally School searches for a future rally star every year to participate in a series of rallying events. This year, the winner was a girl named Stephanie Clark who lives in Exeter.

Each year, Silverstone Rally School holds their annual Rally Quest competition. Usually a separate competition will be held for males and females, but this year both sexes competed together. Despite initial uncertainties about competing with the men, Stephanie gave it her all and managed to win the competition outright.

Devon FA to crowdfund cash for clubs

Devon Football Association are set to be the first FA in the UK to crowdfund money for its 635 clubs, 1,750 teams, supporting its 27,000 members across the County. Across the next 12 months Devon FA hopes its pioneering Crowdfunder campaign could raise thousands of pounds for local clubs in need of funding for a wide range of projects - from small sums for kit to larger capital projects. Each football club will decide what it needs to crowdfund funds for.

Teams of young footballers from Exeter and the surrounding areas are invited to take part in a special Summer event, hosted by Devon Football Association.

The Mini Football Festival for Under 9 and Under 10s is sponsored by Fresha Café - and will take place at St Luke’s School in Exeter on Sunday, June 28. All matches will be played on astro turf.

Organiser Matt Eddy said: “This is a great chance for teams to get their football fix outside of the main season.

Over 2 million tickets have now been sold for Rugby World Cup 2015 as enthusiasm for the Tournament continues to grow ahead of, what could be, the biggest ever Rugby World Cup to date. Devon physio to compete in World Dragon Boat Racing Championships

AN NHS physiotherapist from East Devon has been selected to compete for Great Britain in the 2015 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Canada – just two years after taking up the sport.

Sue Bath, a musculoskeletal (MSK) physiotherapy team lead for the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust, said she was ‘overweight and unfit’ when she moved to the area in 2013.
