Nello cyclists have special reasons for taking part

FORCE Cancer Charity’s largest annual fundraiser – The Nello bike ride – is less than two months away and cyclists from across Devon and around the country are gearing up for the big day on Sunday June 28.

Since the first Nello Century Cycle Challenge in 2000, the ride has raised £1.5million for Exeter-based FORCE, which works locally to support anyone affected by cancer, face-to-face and close to home.

The charity has set a target of raising £127,500 from Nello 2026 to meet the increasing demand for its unique services.

Honorary degree for Chiefs head coach

Exeter Chiefs Head Coach Rob Baxter will be awarded an honorary degree from the University of Exeter after the rugby team’s stunning performance this season led them to become national champions.

Mr Baxter oversaw the Exeter Chiefs rise from the championship to winning the English premiership within less than a decade. He was an Exeter Chiefs player for 14 years.

He will join other illustrious figures who have made a contribution to science, journalism, the Army, education and charity work being honoured during degree ceremonies next week. This includes Dr Mireille Gillings...

The Teign Estuary and Coastal Partnership has launched a new guide helping recreational water users to enjoy the unique conditions on the Teign Estuary and adjacent coasts including Dawlish.

The new pocket-sized guide has been printed in a splash proof format and helps everyone understand the local rules of navigation and safety issues as well as providing associated information such as maritime business links and where to access live wave buoy data.

On Sunday 23rd July, Exeter's Fore Street will be hosting its second Flea Market of the year. The Flea Market is from 12-4, come rain or shine!

Ecological surveying scheme records bio-diversity in East Devon

The East Devon District Council Countryside service is, with the support of 25 volunteers, co-ordinating a series of surveys to gather valuable data on bird, reptile, butterfly, dragonfly, wildlife, bio-diversity and water quality at nature reserves across East Devon.

The surveys which are taking place at a number of nature reserves managed by the Countryside team, include the Maer in Exmouth, Holyford Woods near Colyton, Seaton Wetlands and Trinity Hill.

Police launch knife amnesty

Devon and Cornwall Police is supporting Operation Sceptre, a Home Office instigated week of action aimed at detecting knife related crime, increasing intelligence, community engagement and public reassurance, the main part of which is a knife amnesty.

The policing teams taking part are Cornwall; South Devon; Exeter, East and Mid Devon; North and West Devon and Plymouth.

Members of the public can dispose of unwanted bladed items, without fear of prosecution, such as knives, zombie knives, swords, kitchen knives and unwanted collectibles.

Devon care home residents celebrate International Teddy Bears' Picnic Day

On 10th July, The Seaton Care Home, part of independent care provider Southern Healthcare, celebrated ‘International Teddy Bear Picnic Day’ in their newly refurbished courtyard with under 5’s from local nursery Pink Hippo. The children and residents had lots of fun with their cuddly toys and enjoyed scrumptious cakes made by the residents specially prepared in the care home’s kitchen on the morning.

Catherine Price was aged just 13 when her mum died from cancer and coming to terms with her death hasn’t been easy. Having also experienced the upsetting loss of four other close relations to cancer - Catherine is getting together with her close friend Danni Floyd to take on Race for Life Pretty Muddy. 15-year-old Devon girl dies after taking unknown substance

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a Devon teenager in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Police were informed by an ambulance crew at around 4:50am on Saturday 15th July that they had taken a 15-year-old girl to Torbay District Hospital who was unconscious after taking an unknown substance.

Police attended both the hospital and Bakers Park in Newton Abbot which was where the teenager in question was located. Sadly, the girl later died at hospital. Her next of kin have been informed and police are supporting the family.

Devon and Cornwall Police launch UK's first operational drone unit

Devon & Cornwall and Dorset Police have become the first police forces in the UK to launch a fully operational drone unit.

The latest in drone technology has been trialled in the respective forces since November 2015 and such has been their benefit, an operational drone unit has been created; the first of its kind in the UK.
