Devon Young Carers shine at the 2025 Young Carers Festival

Seventeen young carers from across Devon have enjoyed a well-deserved break from their caring responsibilities at the largest festival in the world dedicated to young people with unpaid caring roles.

It’s the 25th year that Devon Young Carers has attended the Young Carers Festival at YMCA Fairthorne Manor at Botley in Hampshire. Four dedicated staff members, one volunteer, and one inspiring Adult Young Carer accompanied them on a two-night adventure packed with connection, laughter, and discovery - a well-deserved break from their day-to-day caring roles at home.

RMT confirms strike action on Stagecoach South West buses

Bus Workers Union RMT has confirmed that members on Stagecoach South West buses will be mounting a major programme of strike action in a fight for pay and workplace justice.

RMT’s executive has taken the decision to call on all our Stagecoach South West Exeter, Torquay and Barnstaple members to take industrial action as a result of the company’s abject failure to address pay and conditions issues at the heart of this dispute.

Lord Mayor witnesses innovative maths and science curriculum at Exeter school

Exeter’s Lord Mayor has witnessed the innovative curriculum at a city school which is leading the way in teaching science and maths.

Teenagers from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset all attend the Exeter Mathematics School, a state-funded sixth form for mathematicians which is sponsored by the University of Exeter and Exeter College.

Pupils work with university academics and companies such as Dyson and the National Hydrographic Office to complete research into topics such as autonomous flight, artificial gills and neurons.

Axminster's vital flood relief scheme completed

A £1 million flood prevention scheme in Axminster has been completed.

The Devon County Council scheme in Willhay Lane, which has widened and realigned the Millbrook culvert to improve its capacity and flow of water, now provides vital protection to over 160 homes. A new structure has fully enclosed part of the flood prone channel and earlier phases of the scheme enabled the construction of a flood defence wall and the installation of a ‘tree-catcher’ debris grill upstream of the culvert beneath Willhay Lane. The Next Steps South West (SW) Roadshow double-decker bus will be parked up at Princesshay shopping centre this weekend (30 September/1 October), open to anyone seeking information on, or advice about their route into higher education.

Selwood donation helps keep dogs active at Devon rescue centre

Selwood’s Exeter plant hire specialists went to the rescue after a cry for help went up from volunteers at a dog rehabilitation and rehoming centre.

Devon Dog Behaviour Rehab and Rehome put out an appeal after its lawnmower, which was regularly used to maintain two large exercise areas, broke down. The mower was old and parts to repair it could no longer be found.

Local man Alan Sharp, who works as a Senior Project Worker at the Exeter Foyer in Commercial Road, has been shortlisted for the Unsung Hero Award at the Inaugural Foyer Awards 2017 which recognise the achievements and dedication of Foyer staff across the country.
