Gandy Street is the place to be on the First Thursdays of the month this summer

First Thursdays is a new event you won’t want to miss.

From June to September, Gandy Street will come alive on the first Thursday of each month, with a festival atmosphere in the early evening.

The first event takes place on Thursday 4 June, 5–8pm. Expect late-night shopping, live music, street entertainment, extended opening hours at cultural venues and a cocktail trail. All your favourite businesses on Gandy Street and in the surrounding area will be open, including:

A colony of honey bees that took up residence at The Donkey Sanctuary’s headquarters have been saved thanks to a quick thinking member of staff. Jenifer Tucker, website manager at The Donkey Sanctuary who is also a beekeeper heard that the bees had chosen Slade House, the charity’s main offices, as their new home and knew that as a working environment, they would not be able to stay there. Asian hornet nests found by radio-tracking

Electronic radio tags could be used to track invasive Asian hornets and stop them colonising the UK and killing honeybees, new research shows.

Scientists from the University of Exeter attached tiny tags to Asian hornets, then used a tracking device to follow them to their nests; the first time this has been achieved.

Exmoor and Dartmoor projects contributing to our beautiful National Parks could receive a £2,000 boost in recognition of their work thanks to the Campaign for National Parks’ Park Protector Award.

The Award, sponsored by Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust, celebrates the work being done to protect and improve National Parks across England and Wales with the winner receiving a £2,000 bursary and a runner up receiving £500 courtesy of Breedon Group.

Preferred contractor selected for Exeter Bus Station redevelopment

Exeter City Council has selected a preferred contractor for its project to create a state-of-the-art new leisure centre and new bus station in the city centre. The Provincial Grand Lodge of Devonshire have match funding a cheque presented for £2,500 from the Freemasons Grand Charity making a total of £5,000 being presented to the ABF The Soldiers Charity, who themselves support soldiers and former soldiers of the British Army and their families and have been doing so since 1944.

Otter Garden Centres came to the rescue of the Ottery St Mary youth football club after declaring their existing viewing area unfit for purpose.

The family-run garden centre was approached by a member of the football club asking for help with urgent repairs to their lean-to shed, used by parents and supporters as cover when viewing matches. The shed was constructed of wood and sheet metal cladding and was leaking badly.

Hundreds of motoring enthusiasts and families alike enjoyed The Donkey Sanctuary’s annual car show on Sunday despite torrential downpours.
