Devon County Show Confirms 106,000 Visitors in Another Record-Breaking Year

The tickets have now been counted, and Devon County Show has officially confirmed an audited attendance of 106,000 visitors for 2026 — an uplift of 5,000 on last year’s record-breaking figure.

This year’s Show coincided with the late May half‑term break, a rare calendar alignment that contributed to an especially strong family turnout. While children go free on Saturday and therefore cannot be fully audited, the organisers witnessed a noticeably higher number of young visitors enjoying the attractions, activities and livestock displays.

Kitchen appliances stolen from Newton Abbot building site

Police are appealing for information following a burglary at the Charles Church building site, situated off Mile End Road in Newton Abbot.

The burglary happened sometime between 1pm on Saturday 16 November and 7.30am on Monday 18 November 2013.

A locked container was broken into and around £7,000 worth of electrical goods were stolen.

The items are brand new kitchen appliances, including fridges, freezers, cookers, hobs and cooker hoods; most were Electrolux and AEG make.

Local parents and friends have raised £5,000 for Honeylands Specialist Child Assessment Centre in Exeter. Fellow parents and friends of Charlie Palmer have raised £5,000 by supporting her in the Tris Tri Challenge – a 750m swim at Exmouth pool followed by a 20km cycle and a 5km run.

Exmouth house fire

Firefighters were called to a report of smoke coming from a house in Durham close in Exmouth. Initially 2 local crews from Exmouth were sent to this incident but when they arrived they found the ground floor of the property engulfed in flames and called for further support. Crews got to work fighting the fire using 2 sets of breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet awaiting the arrival of the third appliance. Water HQ switches to sunshine

The Exeter headquarters of South West Water is being powered by green energy.

Work to install hundreds of solar panels on the roof of Peninsula House, Rydon Lane, started in August and was completed this month.

The 860 panels, each measuring 1,650mm by 941mm, are capable of producing 210,000kWh of electricity each year – more than 10% of the building’s annual electricity use – all of which will be used on site.

Government rejects £24.1m from G4S

The government has rejected an offer of £24.1m, the private security group G4S has claimed it owes after over-charging for the tagging of offenders.

It is thought that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has turned down the payment whilst working with G4S to establish how much the company owes the Government.

An internal review by G4S concluded that the overcharging was not due to “dishonesty or criminal conduct.

Devon Councillors' unpaid council tax

Five Devon councils have taken legal action against their councillors for not paying council tax, nine times over the last four years.

Mid Devon, North Devon, West Devon district councils, Torridge council and Plymouth City Council have had to take action against their own members.

Councils also sent 76 first-reminders to councillors to prompt payment between 2009 and 2013.
