The Exeter takes on London to Paris cycle for Macmillan Cancer Support

UK health and life insurer The Exeter has announced that seven of their colleagues are preparing to cycle 340 miles from London to Paris in June 2026, as part of a major fundraising effort for the company’s corporate charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The team has already raised more than £23,000, with fundraising continuing ahead of the challenge. The ride reflects The Exeter’s ongoing commitment to supporting Macmillan’s work, which provides care, practical support and advocacy for people affected by cancer across the UK.

£30m of university work back up for grabs

The University of Exeter has announced it is to seek a new contractor for its new £30m Living Systems Institute building after reaching a joint decision with Wates Construction not to proceed with the project. Ongoing discussions failed to find a way to deliver the University’s requirements within the allocated budget, therefore the University and the contractor have reached a mutual decision not to continue with the project. Fire crews save bullocks from 4ft water

Firefighters from Crediton and Devon and Somerset's Fire and Rescue Service's Specialist Rescue Team from Exeter were called in to save two Bullocks stuck in 4ft of water near Crediton.

On arrival crews found the animals stuck in a slow moving semi-stagnant stream and used water safety equipment to rescue the animals.

A bulllock can cost anywhere between several hundred to several thousand pounds depending on the breed and age of the animal.

Update: Eldery woman hit by Car

Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was injured in a collision involving a blue BMW.

The collision took place on 02 January 2014 at 12:40pm.

Police have said the collision occurred when the woman crossed Jubilee Drive from Barrowdale Close in Exmouth.

The woman is local and 81-years-old.

She was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with serious injuries.

The road was re-opened on 02 January 2014 at 6pm.

Household budgets ‘at breaking point’

One in eight people in the South West fear they won’t be able to afford to pay the rent or mortgage at the end of this month, according to new research from Shelter released today.

The research, based on a YouGov survey of over 4,000 British adults, suggests that millions of us across the country will be starting the New Year worried about whether we’ll be able to keep their home.

People urged to protect their homes

People living close to the River Exe in Topsham and any other parts of Exeter that are at risk of flooding from tidal waters are being warned to protect their properties from an expected tidal surge tomorrow morning (Friday 3 January). The Environment Agency has issued severe flood warnings for coastal flooding for Friday morning. Firefighters to strike during high flood risk

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is due to strike between 6:30am and 8:30am tomorrow morning (3 January) during a period of high flood risk.

The Met Office Yellow Weather Warning is to stay in place until late on friday night and heavy rainfall is expected tomorrow morning.

Police warn people to stay out of the sea

Devon and Cornwall Police, together with Her Majesty’s Coastguard , are appealing to local residents and visitors to the region not to enter the sea during the bad weather.

This follows two incidents over the past two days where people who have gone swimming in the sea in rough conditions have either drowned or been reported missing.

Elderly woman hit by car in Exmouth

An elderly woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a road traffic collision in Exmouth earlier today, Thursday, (2 January). The collision took place at around 12.40pm on Barrowdale close, Brixington and involved the woman and a blue BMW car. The woman has been taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The road has been closed at its junction with Jubilee Drive and is not expected to be re-opened for some time.

Body found in search for Swimmer

Police were called to Porthleven Sands Beach in Cornwall this morning (2 January) after the discovery of a man’s body. Officers attended the beach around 9am after a call from a member of the public. Next of kin are being informed although formal identification has not yet taken place. The death is not thought to be suspicious.

Severe flood warnings against loss of life in Exmouth and Sidmouth

The Environment Agency has warned of life-threatening flooding around the Devon Coast.

The agency has issued 14 ‘Severe’ flood warnings ahead of further extreme weather conditions including for the communities around Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton.

Low lying and exposed communities between Exmouth and Lyme Regis, including sea front areas of Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth and Seaton are asked to be aware of the severe warning and take immediate action to stay safe.

Warnings have also been issued for the coastline between between Start Point and Dawlish Warren...
