Public Consultation Opens on Proposed Merger Between Exeter College and Petroc

Exeter College and Petroc have today launched a public consultation on a proposed merger that would see two Devon colleges come together to form a new College Group.

If approved, the new organisation, the Exeter and North Devon Colleges Group (ENDC), would serve more than 16,000 learners across Devon, employ nearly 2,000 staff and have a combined turnover exceeding £100 million.

Campaign to save Exeter Refuge

A campaign group has raised concerns over the planned closure of the Exeter Refuge, which provides shelter for victims of domestic abuse, scheduled next month. The closure is as a result of a decision by Devon County Council’s new Wiltshire based supplier, Splitz, not to provide refuge provision in the future which could see the refuge close in March. SWH (South West Highways Ltd) will be hosting two career taster days on 27 February and 4 March. The taster days will offer under-represented groups, in particular organisations that support people with physical or mental health issues, a chance to gain an insight into a career within the construction industry.

Unemployment rises in Exeter

Unemployment has risen in Exeter and Devon last month despite the national improvements in the job market, data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has shown today. The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Devon grew by 393 to 7,060 in January while 81 more claimants brouht the total to 1,470 in Exeter alone. Overall the South West saw an extra 3,000 people become unemployed bringing the total number 177,000 and marking the second month of increased unemployment in the region. Starting on Monday 24th February an interesting new radio programme 'World War One at Home' will air across local radio stations across the country, with programmes documenting experiences from particular regions.

More unexploded ordinance found in Devon

More unexploded bombs have been unearthed on the South West coast today during post-storm clear ups ongoing throughout the region. A device was found at Mount Batten Point in Turnchapel near Plymouth today marking the third device found on Devon’s beaches this month. The device was found at around 2:15pm this afternoon and reported to the police. Police, HM Coast guard and bomb disposal experts attended the scene. A Health & Social Care training centre is working in conjunction with Devon County Council to provide a unique opportunity for five young people from Devon to take up traineeships and earn apprenticeships with health and social care employers.

Tragic death in Sidmouth after car collapses on man

A Sidmouth man in his 30s tragically died this weekend after a car he was working on collapsed onto him. Two crews of Firefighters from Sidmouth fire station were called to the man’s family home on Betjeman Close at around 6:30pm on Saturday evening. The crews found the man had already been released from the fallen car and gave CPR to the badly injured man. Fire crews then called for police assistance to take the man from the scene. A police helicopter arrived on scene at 7:30pm and airlifted the man to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A file is being...
