Calling all crocheters: Help celebrate the Women’s Rugby World Cup

Crochet enthusiasts in Exeter are being asked to get creative and help celebrate the Women’s Rugby World Cup coming to the city.

Crafters from across Exeter are invited to make rugby-themed crochet pieces for a yarn exhibition at Exeter’s historic Guildhall and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (RAMM).

The Women’s Rugby World Cup comes to Exeter in late August and September, with Sandy Park hosting seven games, including two quarter-finals. As a result, the city will welcome players and fans from nine countries as Exeter is put on the global stage....

Exeter Foundation charities selected

The organisations which raise money during Exeter Chiefs’ home games have been selected for the new rugby season.

This year, 19 organisations will have the chance to assist in the coordination and collection of the funds at Sandy Park. These funds are ring-fenced specifically for these organisations and are distributed at the end of the season at the Exeter Foundation annual presentation dinner.

Beach management project delayed

Unearthing critical information from the early 1990s about the design of Sidmouth’s coastal defences and their technical history has caused further delays to East Devon District Council's Beach Management Plan (BMP) project.

The aims of the current project are to ensure that Sidmouth's sea defence scheme is performing as it was designed to do when it was built in the mid-1990s, and to consider what can be justified to reduce the rate of erosion at East Beach.

SW housing market ‘pauses for breath’

Demand for new homes in the South West fell in July, to the lowest level since October 2011, while the supply of new properties coming onto the market also decreased, according to the July RICS Residential Market Survey.

In the region, 7% more chartered surveyors saw a fall rather than rise in new buyer enquiries in July, with 16% more surveyors seeing a fall in new instructions – a decrease from a net balance of 0% last month.

Scores face losing homes every day in SW

Every day, 36 households in the South West are at risk of losing their home, new analysis from Shelter reveals.

The research, based on data recorded by the Ministry of Justice found that in the past year more than 13,200 homes in the South West are at risk of eviction or repossession, the equivalent of 36 every day.

It also identified the latest hotspots across the region where people are most likely to face losing their home, with Weymouth and Portland and Gloucester topping the list. Other hotspots in the region’s top ten included Bristol, Bournemouth and Plymouth....

The Friends Life Tour of Britain has today (13 August) announced its biggest ever line-up of teams for next month’s race.

It has been confirmed that a record 120 riders from 20 squads will be competing for the Friends Life Yellow Jersey.

Devon County Council will host Stage Five of the race on Thursday 11 September. Starting at The Strand in Exmouth and finishing in Exeter High Street, the Devon Stage, sponsored by South West Highways Ltd, will cover 110miles (177km) of the county.

Two thirds of people in the South West are in favour of mandatory speed controlling technology on commercial and public transport vehicles, a poll commissioned by Living Streets reveals today (13 August 2014) to mark 85 years since the organisation was first formed.
