Exeter charity launches free "Joy Rides" to help people get cycling again

Ride On is launching a new, free cycling programme aimed at beginners, people returning to cycling after a break, or anyone looking for a sociable ride to help them get back outside this summer.

Called Joy Rides, the sessions launch on Saturday 18 July and run weekly through to September, alternating between Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings to fit around work, family, and shift patterns. Each ride follows one of three easy, mostly traffic-free routes around Exeter Quay, the Exe estuary, and Topsham, led by trained ride leaders and open to all abilities.

Budleigh Salterton-based Hilary Mantel’s controversial story ‘The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher’ has made the shortlist for the BBC National Short Story Award 2015 with Book Trust. Unpublished stories by ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ author Mark Haddon, Jonathan Buckley, Frances Leviston, and Jeremy Page are also in the running for this year’s Award. Man, 22, killed in A38 crash

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man died following a road traffic collision on the A38 southbound at Chudleigh, near Newton Abbot.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the fatal collision, involving a single vehicle, which happened just past the petrol station shortly after 12.15am on Wednesday 16 September.

The 22-year-old male driver of the silver Ford Focus, from Saltash, suffered serious head injuries following a collision with a tree and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver’s family have been informed.

Olly gives the gift of life to 5 others

Devon schoolboy Olly Croker who died after a freak accident during a football match has given the gift of life to five other children.

The 12-year-old was struck by a wooden pole during the match between Bradninch and Bampton on Saturday and was flown to Frenchay hospital in Bristol by air ambulance.

Free wifi for Exeter Airport

A leading communications infrastructure company, has partnered with Exeter Airport to deliver free WiFi connectivity, to passengers travelling throughout the terminal building.

Previously, free WiFi had only been available for 30 minutes in centralised departure lounge areas. Tiverton High School has paid tribute to a pupil who died after a freak accident during a football game.
