SquareSessions at The Barnfield Theatre, Exeter

After our successful Exeter debut with The Mastersons from the USA at The Barnfield Theatre last October, we are excited to announce our first three gigs this year at the same venue - a venue we believe to be ideally suited to acoustic music.

The gigs are:

JAZZ MORLEY

Saturday March 16th, 2013 7.30pm £8 in advance, £9 on the door

Jazz Morley is a young performer making her mark the old fashioned way, ever keen to play live, meet new audiences and carve out her career by touring. Jazz is in Exeter on her Spring 2013 tour with a brand new single - “No One Showed Me The Way”.

BBC support came in February 2011 when Jazz took part in the BBC Introducing Musicians’ Masterclass taking place at Abbey Road Studios. BBC3 invited Jazz to contribute to on-line content of the extraordinarily moving documentary ‘Our War’ marking the ten-year anniversary of the war in Afghanistan.

Summer 2012 saw Jazz invited to perform both the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games – one of just a handful of independent artists to do so, along with festival invites to the likes of Isle of Wight and Guilfest.

A nationwide 44-date tour followed in support of her debut single ‘Stories’ produced by Kipper (Grammy and Emmy Award winner) and engineered by Cameron Craig (double Grammy and Brit Award winner).

"Haunting vocals, oozing with the pain of heartache and beautifully humble production make Jazz’s records an enthralling listen. A storming live presence leaves no excuse to miss the experience of seeing her live." -Music Week "This is somebody who’s already got all her ducks in a row" - Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6 Music"Haunting and soulful singer songwriter” - Time Out www.jazzmorley.co.uk

GILMORE & ROBERTS

Wednesday April 17th, 2013 7.30pm £10 in advance, £12 on the door

2013 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Duo nominees Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts combine astounding lap-tapping guitar, fiery fiddle and their trademark harmonies with considerable songwriting talent to make a truly distinctive sound.

Their excellent début album Shadows & Half Light in was followed by Up From The Deep, which scored them a Hancock Award for ‘Best Original Song’ (Fleetwood Fair). In 2012 Gilmore & Roberts released their finest album to date The Innocent Left. It demonstrates a huge leap forward and showcases the duo’s remarkable scope – folk, bluegrass, country, pop and rock – while maintaining their own distinctive roots in the storytelling tradition.

They have toured extensively, including festival performances at - Cambridge Folk Festival and Fairport’s Cropredy Convention. Aside from their work together, both Katriona and Jamie are in high demand as session musicians and have played on several acclaimed albums. Katriona has recently toured with the newly reformed Albion Band, while Jamie has played with young English traditionalists Kerfuffle since 2007.

“Once again this duo refuse to rest on their laurels, never go for the easy option and always strive for something challenging, smart or at least different. They have once again produced a mature album of startling quality.” Maverick 5* Review www.gilmoreroberts.co.uk

MATT ANDERSEN

Friday June 14th, 2013

In all senses Matt Andersen, from the eastern shores of Canada, is a giant of a performer, with the ability to hush the room with his sensitive playing and vocals one minute, and let rip the next. He is truly one of those acts that has to be seen live.

This will be the third time that we've been lucky to feature him on a UK tour and it is a gig that we always eagerly look forward to. Matt’s newest album, Coal Mining Blues, was produced by Colin Linden (who co-wrote and plays on several tunes) and recorded at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York. Featuring the Band keyboardist Garth Hudson and Olabelle singer Amy Helm, it’s a rich vein of new songs, many addressing the trying lives of working people: There’s the self-explanatory “Work Hard for the Luxury,” and the moving title track, which rings true in mining communities from Cape Breton to Sheffield and West Virginia.

But not all of Coal Mining Blues is about hard work, as rollicking up-tempo cuts like “Lay it on the Line” and “Fired Up” bear out. What is it Matt hopes audiences experience when they hear him? “I’m not trying to change anyone’s lives in a big way, but I love it when [listeners] really get involved in the music,” says Matt, performs over 200 shows a year and in 2011 won the Maple Blues Awards for Entertainer of the Year and Acoustic Act of the Year and was nominated for four East Coast Music Association awards. “That’s what really makes it a great night, for everyone.” www.stubbyfingers.ca
