The sounds of Exeter can be as distinctive as the sights and smells, leaving us with treasured memories of our home town. But have you ever wondered what noise really is synonymous with the city?

Well according to Exeter residents, the sound of their city is the bells of Exeter Cathedral.

In a recent survey by Specsavers Hearing Centres, 81% of the local population surveyed said that bells ringing in Exeter Cathedral is the sound that resonates with them the most in the city.

And it seems that as the new term starts, Exeter residents will also be listening out for students partying at Arena most nights. Echoes from Exeter’s underground passages were also noted as a prominent sound in the city.

Donna Morgan, audiologist and hearcare director at Specsavers Hearing Centre Exeter, says: "Hearing loss happens gradually and the subtle loss of everyday sounds, from hearing your own footsteps to the general buzz of your own city, is a sign that you should get your hearing checked."

Despite Exeter residents celebrating the sounds of their city, an alarming 70% admit to never having their hearing checked.

Donna continues: "Sadly many of us are guilty of taking our hearing for granted, so it’s not surprising to see such a high percentage of people saying they’ve never had their hearing checked. I’d urge everyone, specifically those over the age of 40, to incorporate an annual hearing check in to their general healthcare routine."
