MP unveils memorial to M5 accident victims

A memorial was today unveiled in tribute to the seven people killed in one of Britain's worst motorway accidents.

Families of the dead gathered along with survivors and emergency workers on the anniverary of the crash on the M5 near Taunton.

A memorial of a split tree was officially unveiled in woodland at Hankridge, close to where the accident happened.

Taunton Deane MP Jeremy Browne officially unveiled the memorial and it was dedicated by the Archdeacon of Taunton, the Rev John Reed.

Geoffrey Counsell, aged 50 and from Somerset, has been charged with seven counts of manslaughter following an accident on the M5 last November.  He will appear at Bristol Magistrates' Court on Monday November 12. Seven people died and 51 people were injured in gthe crash following a collision between 34 vehicles.
