Upping sticks and finding a new place to call ‘Home’ is an exciting time for many - but it’s not without a few challenges. So, it’s no surprise that most of those seeking pastures new have to have a good reason for making a move.

The quest for more space is the biggest single reason for moving home, according to a new survey by David Wilson Homes, which is creating new homes in Exeter. The five star housebuilder asked 2,000 people from across the region about their biggest influence for seeking a change in the next five years, and more than a quarter (26.4 per cent) wanted more room to spread out in.

“We place great emphasis on size and layout when designing our new homes,” said sales director Sara Parker. “So, it’s good to know we’re on the same wavelength as our buyers.”

Other influences on respondents moving home over the next five years include rising interest rates (3.7 per cent), better schools (4.2 per cent), less space (4.1 per cent), change in circumstances, like a new job (19.2 per cent), and being closer to family (5.2 per cent).

The survey also revealed that more than a third don’t plan to move in the foreseeable future.

“There may be a number of reasons for this and for some the task of selling their existing home can be off-putting - but we have an answer for that. Part exchange removes all the uncertainty associated with a move. David Wilson Homes is a guaranteed cash buyer, so there is no chain, no last-minute price haggling and no hidden costs - and people can stay in their old property until their new home is ready.”

Barriers can also include expense and ensuring buyers have the deposit needed. This is where Help to Buy has benefits and the scheme is available to first time buyers and those moving up the housing ladder. Buyers need just a five per cent deposit which can be the equity in their home and many lenders are able to offer the best mortgage rates because the UK Government provides a guarantee of up to 15 percent.

“This means it’s easier than ever for buyers to secure the finances to own the home they really want in the perfect location,” added Sara. “And we have specialists at developments across the region who are able to help and advise potential buyers on their best options.

“Moving home is one of the most significant experiences in many people’s lives, so we do everything we can to make it an appealing proposition - and as straightforward and smooth as possible. We feel we’re on the right track, and we’ll work hard over the coming years to find innovative new ways to make a dream move a reality for our buyers.”

David Wilson Homes is currently building new homes in Exeter at Minerva and Harts Meadow.
