Peninsula celebrates budding success of new venture

Peninsula Private Medical Services opened its doors to invited guests for the ‘official’ launch Waterloo Court Health and Wellbeing Hub near Uffculme.

With the service already up and running, and word spreading fast, the founders were keen to celebrate successes so far and have the opportunity to showcase the impressive capabilities to invited guests.

Around 50 people took the opportunity to look around the facilities of the bespoke building, which grew from two old farm cottages. The main building at Waterloo Court now houses a private GP service with specialisms...

Quit and get fit – Exeter leisure centre celebrates No Smoking Day

Exeter’s Riverside Leisure Centre is joining forces with Devon’s public health team to celebrate national No Smoking Day tomorrow (Wednesday, 13 March).

The celebration event will also offer free badminton and circuits, for people to have a taster of what’s on offer at their local leisure centres, many of which are offering special promotions to help smokers ditch the cigarettes for good and get into exercise. Exeter-based fashion boutique Dukes are now stocking London-based lifestyle fitness, swimwear and loungewear brand Vevie.

Vevie was launched last year and was founded by Caroline Greenslade. Alzheimer’s report highlights deeper problem, says Vitalise

National disability charity Vitalise says that the shock findings of a new Alzheimer’s Society report into residential care for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia point to an even deeper problem.

Responding to the Alzheimer’s Society’s new report, ‘Low Expectations’, which found that only 41% of relatives of loved ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia said they enjoyed a good quality of life in residential care, Vitalise’s research has revealed that the problem extends to people with other disabilities and their carers too.

Smokers in Devon are being encouraged to "swap fags for swag", and consider the financial benefits of quitting, on the 30th anniversary of No Smoking Day on Wednesday 13 March.

Nearly one in six adults in the UK smoke, including 18 per cent in Devon. But figures show two thirds of them want to quit.

Devon writer Kate Vane's crime novel Recognition has been published on Amazon Kindle.

Kate, who works in Exeter, has previously written TV drama and short fiction. This is her first novel.

Recognition features a trauma counsellor, Nat Keane, who is asked to work with the family of a murder victim. However, she has history with them – she was a police officer on the original investigation who became over-involved with the family.

Did you know that quitting smoking is the most important thing you can do for your baby?

If you are pregnant and smoke yourself, or live with someone who smokes around you, your baby is exposed to a number of dangerous chemicals.

Your baby may receive a restriction in the amount of oxygen it needs, causing its heart to have to beat harder. Smoking can cause a greater risk of miscarriage and still birth and a lower birth weight.

After they are born, your baby is more at risk of ear infections and asthma. Plus they are more likely to become a smoker themselves....
