Listen to Your Body: The Importance of Rest and Recovery

Modern life celebrates hustling. People often attribute working late to being a success factor. But ignoring such aches and exhaustion never helps. Something always gives—mind, body, or attitude. The truth? Pushing through exhaustion rarely improves results; it often leads to burnout. Although health experts may use scientific terminology, the body knows when it has reached its limit. It's akin to disregarding the blinking fuel light when driving. Do you feel a persistent stiffness after a long day? It's more than a nuisance—it's a warning.

My journey from insomnia to sleep

Before the course started

This evening I start my first session of insomnia treatment with Stephanie Romiszewski who is a Sleep Physiologist at the Sleepyhead Clinic in Exeter. I am both excited and nervous as I begin this journey into the unknown, a little sceptical, as nothing I have tried in the past has made the slightest bit of difference to aid my sleep, not even sleeping tablets and I have believed, for quite some time now, that I am beyond help.

First, let me tell you a bit about myself. I am 44, happily married, with a beautiful 8-year-old son who is my world. I...

On Wednesday11 March, The British Heart Foundation’s No Smoking Day returns for its 32nd year.

The annual campaign inspires and helps smokers who want to quit. This year, over one million smokers are expected to use No Smoking Day to quit.

As well as supporting as many smokers as possible to take part and begin their smoke-free lives, our Public Health team has been working with Devon Partnership NHS Trust to provide support for people with mental health issues – who are particularly susceptible to the damaging effects of smoking.

Smoking prevalence in Devon is 16.4...

Old mothers know best: killer whale study sheds light on the evolution of menopause

A new study led by the Universities of Exeter and York has shown that female killer whales survive after menopause because they help their family members find food during hard times. This research provides insights into why women continue to live long after they can no longer have children. Menopause is one of nature’s greatest mysteries. Most animals die around the same time they stop reproducing. Killer whales are one of just three species – alongside humans and another type of whale – where females continue to live for many years after giving birth to their last baby. Female killer...

Health chiefs agree to make HPV testing ‘high priority’

A ground-breaking project is being rolled out across Devon to eliminate the potentially fatal hepatitis C virus (HCV) from the county – supported by the region’s key health chiefs. National drug charity Addaction has joined forces with the Hepatitis C Trust to pilot the scheme, which was announced at a meeting of the region’s top health professionals and decision makers in Exeter earlier this week. The project includes hugely increasing rates of HCV testing by training many more drug service staff in awareness and how to test, along with a peer educator system which will see people who...

Over 300 members of staff at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust have pledged their support for the #hellomynameis campaign during a week of engagement activities. The #hellomynameis campaign was created by Dr Kate Granger, a young hospital consultant from Yorkshire, to improve patient experience. Kate became frustrated with the number of staff who failed to introduce themselves to her when she was...

Smokers urged to become ‘quitters’

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is encouraging smokers in Exeter to visit their local stop smoking services ahead of this year’s No Smoking Day on 11 March.

The charity’s latest figures show that around 23% of adults in Exeter smoke – the national average is 18%. Studies have found that smokers are four times more likely to succeed in quitting with help from NHS stop smoking services than if they go it alone.

Dr Mike Knapton, Associate Medical Director at the BHF, said: “Smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and a variety of cancers. The good news...
