Saying Goodbye: Exeter to remember babies that did not get to stay

Each year, over 30 million families worldwide experience the heartbreak of losing a baby, with around 258,000 losses in the UK alone. For many, there is no funeral, no memorial, and little support to acknowledge the life that was lost.

To address this, Mariposa International launched the ‘Saying Goodbye’ remembrance services in 2012 at Exeter Cathedral. Since then, over 260 services have taken place across seven countries, allowing tens of thousands of families to honour babies lost during pregnancy, at birth, or in infancy.

Roll up, roll up for free family fun on Exeter Quayside

After the huge success of last year’s Summer at the Quayside, Exeter’s historic quayside area will again be home to a jam-packed programme of fun and quirky activities for all the family. Organised by the Exeter Canal and Quay Trust, free events will be taking place over the school summer holidays until Friday 1 September.

According to the Children's Social Work Statistics Scotland: 2021/22 , there were close to 5,600 Scottish children being looked after by the Local Authority at that time. Almost three quarters of those children (4,155) were staying with the 3,415 registered foster families, as per the same report. While we do see a slight boost in the number of foster homes as compared to the previous year, evidently, it’s still not enough.

IKEA Exeter has announced the reopening of its free in-store creche area, Småland, from Friday 7th April. It comes following the closure of the service in March 2020 due to the pandemic.
