If you own a dog and your pet hate is people who are not responsible owners, you’ll enjoy a special event on Sunday 27 April as East Devon District Council hosts another charity ‘Dogs' Day Out’ in Phear Park, Exmouth.

From 10am to 4pm pet owners and their canine companions can enjoy a huge range of free activities in aid of The Dogs' Trust. Free micro chipping, a fun dog show, agility displays, a tombola and free giveaways are all on offer as EDDC promotes responsible dog ownership in a fun, friendly way.

Over 10 stalls will feature merchandise, free goodies and a range of information from different groups, advising on dog health and wellbeing, behavioural problems, preventing dog barking complaints and identifying dogs to prevent straying. Among those giving advice will be the council’s Dog Warden and Environmental Health team.

All proceeds from the day will be donated to The Dogs' Trust.

Organiser Jill Wheller from East Devon District Council’s Environmental Health team explained: “We had a lot of success with similar events in 2012 and last year, so we’ve decided to come back with something even bigger and better for 2014. It will be great fun for dogs and owners alike, taking advantage of one of East Devon’s most popular parks and, with a bit of luck, some April sunshine.

“When it comes to problems with dogs we always find that prevention is better than cure, so along with the fun and frolics we’ll be offering some practical advice and support for owners to help prevent any problems with their pets.

“So, whether you’re seeking advice, would like to take advantage of free micro chipping or simply fancy a fun family day out in the park, please come along and join us at Dog’s Day Out”.

The council, which is responsible for handling stray dogs, noise complaints and for cleaning parks and streets, handled over 303 dog-related issues last year. It’s hoping that events such as this one will encourage responsible dog ownership and help people avoid problems with their pet.

Councillor Iain Chubb, East Devon’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “The vast majority of dog owners are very responsible and take great care of their pet. We’re hoping that by providing extra advice and highlighting some of the issues we’ll nip a few future problems in the bud. It’s not about finger-wagging, but providing friendly, helpful advice to help people do right by their pets.

“If you don’t need any support or advice that’s great; just come along, enjoy the activities, grab some goodies and have fun!”.
