Ancient Holy Well Forms Centrepiece for new Dartmoor Community Pageant

The spirit of a medieval saint will be evoked in a new community ritual for Dartmoor, which aims to reconnect people with water and the land.

St Gudula’s Well in Ashburton, an ancient holy well, will be the focus of the ceremony, which will honour water as the source of all life, and also celebrate the start of summer.

‘Gudula’s Gathering’ has been conceived by events curator and writer Kirsteen McNish, and Helen Bruce of the Dartmoor Preservation Association, as the closing event for the Dartmoor Tors Festival.

Fourth time lucky for Matt at 40th Dartmoor Folk Festival

IT was fourth time lucky for Matt Norman at the 40th anniversary Dartmoor Folk Festival, held at South Zeal near Okehampton at the weekend.

Folk music, song and dance enthusiast Matt, from Bristol, was declared the champion adult Dartmoor Step Dance competition champion for 2017 after a hotly-fought competition.

Matt, formerly from South Zeal and Exeter, had previously won the title in 2008, 2011 and 2015 and now equals competitor Lisa Sture, from North Devon, who holds the record for having previously won the title on four occasions.

Make a date with St Austell Brewery Ladies’ Day

The social event of the year is nearly upon us with just days to go until the excitement and glamour of St Austell Brewery Ladies’ Day returns once again to Newton Abbot Racecourse.

This year Ladies’ Day will take place on Tuesday 22 August.

The action begins at 17.30 with the first race, the Babbacombe Scaffolding 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle getting the event off to a flying start.

Minor gathering set to be a major event

A charity classic car show in Exmouth is expecting to attract over 200 cars when it opens the gate on Sunday 20th August, writes David Morgan.

Exeter actor nominated for theatre award

A theatre company formed by five graduates from Birmingham School of Acting has been nominated for the National Student Drama Festival (NSDF) 2017 Edinburgh Award. In 2016, the Birmingham students created Theatre63 – which now boasts a strong collective of eight alumni – and they all continue to strive to complete their original and ultimate goal of performing 63 shows. Stalls and attractions bring crowds to Honiton Community Festival

Around 500 people visited the Honiton Community Festival where many local community groups held stalls and attractions.

A number of demonstrations were held throughout the day at the event which was held at Allhallows Playing Field.

These included displays by SYTL Karate, which included a very useful Stranger Danger message, the SPS Kickboxing group who showed off their skills, the lively Honiton Twirlstars who put on a great performance and musicians from the Honiton Youth Orchestra provided some great music for the event.
