The Role of Tutors in Achieving Top A-Level Results

A-Level success is rarely just about working harder. More often, it comes from working in a smarter and more focused way. The jump from GCSEs to A-Levels is big and many students find that classroom lessons alone are not always enough to help them reach the very top grades. This is why many families turn to Edumentors' A-level tutors online , who can give one-to-one support, clearer explanations and a more structured way to revise. The best students often combine school learning with tutoring to improve weak topics, sharpen exam technique and stay consistent across the two years....

Record number of medical offers for Exeter School pupils

A record 15 Exeter School pupils have been offered places at Medical Schools or to read Veterinary Science for September 2016.

Many of these pupils received more than one offer and in the competitive field of Medicine they should be congratulated on this considerable achievement.

The pupils have worked hard preparing for the application process, securing excellent grades at AS Level, facing a barrage of aptitude tests such as BMAT and UKCAT and weathering the grueling interview process.

During the senior years at the school they have attended and, to a large degree...

Strange life forms that have travelled through space have been spotted at Exeter Junior School. On 2 September 2015, two kilograms of rocket seeds (that’s the sort of rocket you get in salads) travelled from Baikonur Cosmodrome in a Soyuz 44S rocket to the International Space Station. There the seeds were looked after and stored in micro gravity by Britain’s Tim Peake. The seeds then hitched a ride back to Earth with a couple of friendly cosmonauts. Back on Earth, members of Exeter Junior School Science Club then began their experiments. The children planted 200 seeds from anonymous “Blue...

The whole school, comprising boys and girls aged 7-18, staff and governors, gathered to give thanks to its founders in a beautiful service.

Revd Dr John Searle commented on how Exeter School and Exeter Cathedral shared over 1000 years between them.

The Reverend Bruce Kinsey, Chaplain and Welfare Officer, Balliol College, Oxford, gave an address at the school’s service about mindfulness. He spoke about the importance of feeling grateful in our lives and encouraged pupils...

Deaf Academy speaks volumes with ‘Voice Off’

Imagine feeling left out of conversations because you can’t understand what your family are saying to you or the enormous sense of isolation because you can’t make yourself understood by your school friends or workmates.

Sadly, for many Deaf people this can be an everyday reality in the wider hearing world.

During National Deaf Awareness Week, 2-8 May, Exeter Deaf Academy opens registrations for a brand new challenge event called ‘Voice Off’. This is a fun communication challenge where individuals, schools, businesses, clubs and groups switch off their voice and find other...

Honiton children learn do’s and don’ts of responsible pet ownership

Responsible pet ownership is an important message that East Devon District Council’s Environmental Health team, supported by East Devon Eddie (the council’s canine mascot), is keen to convey across the district and what better way to start than by visiting schools to educate young pet carers of the future.

As part of a programme to introduce young people to the do’s and don’ts of owning and looking after a dog, East Devon Eddie has been sending out members of his team to talk to Primary schoolchildren in Year 2 and above.

The most recent Pet Carers of the Future...

Teddy Bears’ Picnic draws a hungry crowd to new Pre-Prep

Future and prospective pupils for the Maynard School’s Pre-Prep Department, opening in September 2016, enjoyed a fantastic teddy bears’ picnic in their new classrooms on Thursday 21 April..

The entire 15 spaces available were taken up by girls aged 4 – 7 years, all excitedly bringing their favourite teddy bear to join in with a spot of sandwich making (and eating!) as well as some general play activities.

“There were many highlights,” said Emma Cook, who took up her role as the new Headmistress of the Pre-Prep at the start of this term, “but, for me, seeing their reaction...

Schoolchildren from a Sidmouth school have planted rocket seeds, some of which have been into space, with a little help from Otter Nurseries.

Marilyn White, founder of the garden centre in Ottery St Mary, visited St John’s International School with donations of seed trays and compost to assist with the experiment, organised by the RHS to see if there is any difference between ‘space seeds’ and normal seeds.

Two kilograms of seeds were sent up to the International Space Station on Soyuz 44S in September 2015, and British ESA astronaut Tim Peake took charge after his arrival...
